What Guns/Loads do you have lined up for Hunting Season?

ZeeZee Senior MemberPosts: 18,968 Senior Member
We talked about "Where", so let's talk about "With What".

What guns and loads will you be using this season?

For me, it's a lot of wishful thinking.

* .300 Remington Ultra Mag 26" barrel- 208gr A-Max

* 7mm Remington Ultra Mag 26" barrel- 162gr A-Max (waiting on new stock for the rifle)

* .308 "Short" (Winchester) 16" barrel - 125gr Hornady SST (maybe subsonic 208gr A-Max)

* .308 Winchester 20" barrel- 150gr Ballistic Tip

* XP-100 in 7mm-08 Remington 14" barrel- 162gr A-Max

* MOA Maximum in .338-06 A-Square 18" barrel- 200gr Ballistic Silvertip

* Ruger SBH Hunter Bisley 7.5" barrel- 240gr Hornady XTP

* Ruger SBH 10.5" barrel- 240gr Hornady XTP

So, what guns are you guys planning on using this season and what loads are you going to run in them?

    .30 cal Resume over 43 grains of Charm/BS.....I get 4 good hits but 1 flyer, so I'm pretty sure I'm pulling one with too much smart-talk.

    .30-06 Remington 700 XCRII with 168 grain Barnes TTSX launched by H4350 at 2900 fps- it seemed to work last year.

    Just acquired a 5.5" Ruger Redhawk .44. Pop and I are in the early stages of learning the REALLY weird science of determining and uniforming cylinder throat diameters, which has to be ironed out before we settle on sizing die specs for our cast bullets. I REALLY want to drop something with bullets I've cast myself, but time is running short. Might not get the time this year.

    At any rate, I've got a SWEET mold for it from an outfit called NOE. This is a clone of Elmer Keith's classic .44 slug with two sets of swappable nose pins - one gives you the original 255 grain SWC; the other, a 235 grain hollow point. Accurate 296 is probably the propellant of choice, but I feel I have to at least TRY Alliant 2400 in honor of Elmer's memory.

    For the deer rifle zone:
    .338 Federal with 225gr Deep Curls
    .338 Win mag with 225gr Deep Curls

    If I manage to get lucky and bloody those two, the next in line will be the 7mm STW with a yet to be determined handload.

    If my 2 step-daughters decide to come up and play (which I doubt), I got a Ruger 77MkII Compact in .260 (129gr SST), a Ruger 77MkII in .250 Savage (unknown handload), a Ruger Hawkeye Compact in 7.62x39 (123gr SST), and a Ruger #1 in 460 S&W (either 360gr Buffalo Bore or 200gr Hornady factory load) that they can use.

    i am anxious to see how those perform. Especially at the .338 Fed velocity. Seeing as how I'll eventually use those in my .338-06 when I get a load worked up and at the barrel length, it'll be close to the Federal.

    The custom .375 H&H Caleb built for me is coming along on my cow elk hunt. It will be backed up by my Browning X-Bolt in 7mm WSM.

    Well let's see. Bow season rolls around first so I'll be using my Martin Proweler cam bow. With XX75 camo hunter Easton aluminum shafts spined at 2317. Bear cut on contact heads @ 110 grns.
    After that is ML season so I'll be using a Knight Mk 85 in .54 cal, Yes not only the much maligned in-line but just to rub it in, it wears a Bushnell 1.5x4.5 Scopechief. Probably be running 80 grns of 777. And to prove there is no end to sacrilegious ways I'll be shooting a 348 grn all copper power belt bullets.

    When modern gun season rolls around I'll more than likely be using my .30 '06 with factory 150grn core-locts. But if I can finally get my berm thrown up I want to try some 180grn ABs I've got sitting on the bench. As well as some 170gn .323 soft points a friend gave me that I promised I'd try to kill something with

    For the .375, it's going to be the 300 gr. Partition. For the 7mm WSM, probably looking like the 160 gr. AccuBond, but I may test the 140 gr. GameKing to see if that one works better. Sierra has been on a roll lately out of my guns.

    That rifle with your loads are first up to bat. The load is running at about 2400fps.

    If I get to Jerry's I will shoot something with the Scooter. Anything else I take will be getting a 200 gr slug out of the Whelen.

    Request received, however, be advised. it's FAR down the "batting order" for this season. My SPs are feeling neglected. None of them have been hunting since the year Dan J died. So they'll be up first. Pretty much the order I listed them will be my line up for this season.

    edited to add: Though the 45-70 (14" if I get around to getting the scope back on it) and 30-30 (23" with 155gr Bergers) contender barrels will probably be ahead of the Grendel as well. It's taken 2 deer, while neither Contender frame, nor the 3 pistol and 1 rifle barrels have ANY.

    Dang near have more that need to be "bloodied" than have been :yikes:

    Plus have 44 mag SBH and POSSIBLY the 686. Snakes are all either of them have killed

    If everything works out right when we get home, I plan on using the .300 blackout with the 110 grain Barnes. After that will be the 6.5x284.

    If the locations do not work out, it'll be the .44 mag with Buffalo Bore (shotgun zone).

    I am determined to use my recently scoped Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull to drop one of our puny whitetail deer this year. My load is the factory HSM load that I bought a case of years ago and still have no run out of. 300 Gr Hornady HP at 1600FPS.

    Outside of that, I REALLY want to take a suppressed deer. If I can get my NEF .45Colt rifle threaded in time, I plan on smacking one ASAP.

    The Marlin XL7 30-06 150gr GS HV 3086fps - will only use this rifle until I bloody it. It needs to polk a hole in something.

    Not sure what I'm using. Maybe the AR with 80 grain target bullets. But I have to get a load worked up. I may get some bullets for my 7-08. And I may try and redeem the slug gun.

    Tikka T3 lite in 7mm08 with 45.5 gr of Varget pushing a 140gr Sierra PSP.

    Sako Vixen in .222 with 24.5 gr of Varget pushing a 50gr Sierra PSP.

    Tikka T3 Super Varmint in 22-250 using Varget behind the same 50gr Sierra PSP.

    I still have to work up a load for the pre 64 Mod 70 308 Featherweight topped with the scope Wambli sent me. Need to get that done asap as I would like to blood it.

    Also have the pre 64 375 H&H to sight in and blood at some stage.

    Havent taken the 6.5X55 out and blooded it ............

    Then there is the custom stocked pre 64 Mod 70 in 270 that snake is waiting for me to scope and blood so he can go Nyaaaa Nyaaaa Nyaaaa........." I told you it will kill deer!" ( Something which I doubt it will do considering it is barely adequate as a coyote rifle)

    Then there is the 8X57J (318') Mauser Sporter that needs to be sighted in...........wouldn't mind taking that out at some stage.................

    .................Havent yet shot any animals with the 10.75X68 Mauser............

    .30-06 165 gr. Nosler BT over 59 grains of R-22

    7mm-08 139 gr. Hornady SST over Varget

    .243 Factory loads likely, due to bullet unavailability

    .223 70 gr. Barnes TSX over Varget

    .44 Mag 240 gr. Speer semi-jacketed SP over 2400

    Likely, I will only get around to using the 7mm-08 for whitetail or feral hog.
