Nice Waterbuck

Waterbuck of a lifetime. Double kneeling off of Bog Gear. Tried both prone and sitting, but there was too many limbs in the way. Even with double kneeling I had to thread the needle so to speak. Relatively short shot at 176 yards I think (Could be 167). One shot and 40 yards later he was done. Thanks to Thinus En Sanet Steyn (Big Water Safaris) and Philip! Had a hunting/shooting buddy with me too, Todd Fischer. Another very good friend, Darrell Holland had hunted with me on my first day. 7mm Dakota XP-100/180 Grain Berger. It will be measured tomorrow. He weighed 750 pounds.

First time I ever saw one. Looks like a tough customer. Sounds like a serious bullet too.

Congrats! That is a trophy to be proud of. for the rest of your life.

I lived near there for a year in 1977 - 78. Great area, a lot like Kansas, flat and featureless all around. I remember driving the highway and we came to a group ( congress, yep that's the term ) of baboons, who had blocked the road by sitting in it. They would hold their hands together begging for food as the cars drove by. A truly incredible sight.

What's next? Did you bring your Frankenruger? A Springbok or Impala would be perfect for it. Make sure to enjoy some Biltong ( South African jerky ) , a campfire ( braai ) with some grilled Boerworse ( farmer sausages ) , and melktert ( milk tart, dessert ) It's been 40 years since I was there and I still miss it.

    Keep us updated!

Nice lookin' shootin' iron too. It's 7mm Dakota? That's a fine cartridge. How long's your barrel? Nice looking gun.

Congrats on the trophy. Did you take a package trip for a number of hunts and trophies? I hope to have enough saved to take a safari in about two years and I'm trying to learn as much as I can about them. Six Gun posted a write up several years ago about his safari and of all of the trips I've read about so far, that one sounded the most appealing. Can you tell us more about the whole trip?

He's a beast! Great work! Waterbuck is on my list if I ever get back to South Africa. Yours is definitely a high bar to meet.

Thanks guys when I have some more time, I will do some more updates.
My professional hunter did something he says he hardly ever does, he measured the horns of the waterbuck.
Horn length 29.5" and 30". Bases both 10". Green score SCI 79.5"
I don't keep track of things like this, and had no reference point until he told me what the entry-level is for this animal in SCI.
This beautiful animal was truly a gift, and I am very blessed.
