Self Defense advice that's a little... wonky...

A few years ago, I remember a fellow writing about how you can carry defensive tools in a "non-permissive environment." Airports, courthouses, and other areas where firearms and workable knives are verboten. One of his "tricks" was to use a heavy-ish metal cane or a walking stick. He said that if you walked as though you needed it, nobody would take away your medical device and you would still have something you can use in defense.

I kinda question the logic of this. What if you stop hobbling? Would that blow your cover? And wouldn't carrying a cane make you look weak and more like a victim? Maybe not in the area, but traveling to and from can cause issues. Sometimes I wonder about the advice others give out....

For reference, here's a defensive cane by Ka-Bar.

    there are a lot of different aluminum canes out there; so, I don't think that there is an issue if used in a real SD event.

    Besides there are a lot of us around that need a cane at times.

    I use a Bubba Stik with a big brass horse collar hame for a handle. Nothing like a chunk of solid brass bigger than a golf ball on a 36" hardwood dowel rod for an attitude adjuster. They're welcome to X-ray my left leg and see the two titanium braces and 15 screws in there anytime they want to question why I need it!

    At one time a walking stick was a fashionable accessory for the well dressed man.

    An empty sock with some heavy pocket change would be less conspicuous.
    My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

    A bar of GI lye soap in a boot sock was a powerful persuader in a beef out behind the barracks!

    When one is out and about in town, one still sees the odd cane dear boy;

    But when one is out in the rough a shooting stick is the thing;

    Usually when I'm traveling in a NPE, I've carrying items with me that could serve as SD implements in a pinch. Backpack, laptop, aluminum water bottle, ball point pen, etc. Anything can be an improvised weapon should you really need it to be.

    EDIT: I've also decided that, especially in a NPE, being "just another face in the crowd" is an excellent self defense tool. If you don't stand out, you're far less likely to be targeted. I take this further by being relatively "non-stand-offish" IE I don't raise my voice in arguments with service industry members (great example: if the wrong order is brought to me I don't make a big deal about it), I do my best to maintain level headed composure, and I treat everyone politely.

    This. Anything in arm's reach.

    Drilling a hole about 6" deep in the tip end of a cane and pouring it full of lead makes it "balance" better.

    Methinks ya'll didn't get the point of the thread: carrying a cane when you don't need is so you can have a stick to beat someone with. To me that's odd... why look weak and possibly bring added attention to yourself?

    I need the cane- - - - -if it wasn't so heavy and unweildy, I'd be more comfortable in some of the places I go (like downtown Little Rock tonight) carrying a Louisville Slugger!

    Little Rock...............I didn't feel good about that town even back in the 80s as we passed through. Got off the Interstate fer some gas.........sign on the pump said pay first............so I went in and started to hand the clerk some money..............he said "You white ain't you.......go pump yer gas and pay me when you are done".

    So then went to find a pizza joint and went through a neighborhood to get turned around in the right direction, you could feel the racial tensions in the air, lots of dirty looks. Wife and girls in the car with me heading to a new duty station. Comfort was a .357 I had in the front seat loaded with some "Highway Loads" I call them. 158 grain JFPs.

    Happiness was seeing LR in my rear-view mirror.

    I was stationed just north of there in Jacksonville in 1968-69. It was not very safe to get north of the river (North Little Rock) if a person was light-skinned, sort of like being in East St. Louis! Now the only difference is it doesn't matter which side of the river you're on. I heard a few gunshots about 3:00 AM, but I didn't go outside my motel room to investigate. Back home now, thank the Lord!
