Song lyric game

The movie quote thread got me to thinking of this. It's simple. Post part of a song lyric, and someone else can guess the song and singer.

I'll start with an easy one.

"it's short and it's sweet, and I knew complete when I wore a younger man's clothes."
Jerry

Gun control laws make about as much sense as taking ex-lax to cure a cough.

Yep. Told you it was easy. Here's one that's a bit harder.

I'd sing the Red River Valley.

and wonder if well he's drilled had gone dry.

    I’ve been a puppet, a poet, a pauper, a pirate; a pawn and a king.

Gregg Allman wrote it and the Allman Brothers performed it in the very early 70’s and Hatchet did their up tempo cover in the late 70’s. The early solemn Allman version is way different and artistically better to me.

As with this song, I'll usually prefer the Allman Brothers version, it's just that around here they don't play the Allman's, but rather Hatchet's...All

And while the Allman's album version is great, I think their liver versions are even better.
