flu

Well, I heard this years shot was only 20% effective. Looks like I am in the 80%. At least the strain it seems I have is like a miserable chest cold. Tried the whiskey and tea, tried herb teas, doubled up on vitamins and taking cold eze.

After 2 nights of mostly staying up coughing modern art up, I brought 3 bottles of Walgreens brand stuff home. Took it at 4, started to sleep, woke up 4 hrs later, took more, woke up 4 hrs later, took more, slept for about 7 straight.

Guess what the plan for tonight is...

The Kid and the wife got flu shots at school. I was busy with work, and did not get the shots.

Guess who has the flu right now? The Kid and the wife. I am living on EmergenC and purell right now. Got the newer 4 strain shot yesterday, but that may be like closing the barn door when the horse is LONG gone.

Grandkids gave it to my son who gave it to me the first of December. I too had the vaccine. Put me in bed for four days (same symtoms as yours.) Stopped coughing after 10 or 14 days.

I have no idea if the shot helped or not. I don't do remedies. Took a few anti inflamitories for fever and a bag of menthol cough drops.

I saw on the news, it killed a previously healthy 21 yro kid.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

Knock on wood, but I've never had the flu in my entire 66 years of existence on this planet. Never had a flu shot, either.

I don't plan on getting a shot this year, and hope I can keep my winning streak intact against the flu.

Got the flu shot about 6 weeks ago or so. Got the flu two days ago. Not really horrible. Very nauseated. Headache, aching. Took dayquil the first day and did very little. Better yesterday. Only hurts when I cough.

I get the flu shots every year. Got the Pneumonia one to which will take me to 65 a decade and change out.

I dont have time to be in bed for 4 days. Although today I am glad that I have jack to do at work. I feel about a half bubble off plumb in general.

Looks like it started in family just not sure if is flu yet ... my Mom has a little more than a cold and now I am coughing. As to “therapy” honey, lemon juice and white lightening is my start ... along with spicy tortilla soup to clear congestion.

You may have Influenza "A". The flu shot is pretty ineffective against it. I had it several years ago while working in the hospital, despite having the vaccine. It was 5 days of 103 every 5 to 6 house, followed by sweats. The cough was nearly uncontrollable and lasted nearly 4 weeks. It can last 8 weeks. Pneumonia is not out of the question. If you have a high fever, you probably got it. If it goes more than a week, consider an MD appointment to rule out pneumonia. If you start having shortness of breath, it's ER time.

This!!! probably 90% of the + influenza cases we currently have in our hospital are the A strain. Not to be fooled with, if any of the symptoms Dan described present, seek medical attention sooner rather than later.

Dont know if I had the flu or massive stomach virus this past week. But what ever I had it was nasty. Wouldn't wish it on anyone. Didn't get a flu shot this year but next year I will. I remember a quote from my son who had what I got the week before. Looking at the trash can in front of the toilet as I made one of my many trips,.i said.i have nothing left to give you! Apparently I was wrong!

Messed around and didn't get the shot, sounds like I didn't miss much. Got it last year, and had to call in to work a couple days. That was probably the 3rd time in 25 years of working that I have called in sick. I'm always an idiot and tough it out. Not this time, I was whipped. And, I'm older and wiser now. I Get no reward for not using sick days, so if I feel like a bag of crap, I'm staying home.

I've had it twice. Last year, and 1999/2000. I spent New Year's Eve 1999 buck ass naked on the bed under the ceiling fan sweating my sack off with a one oh something fever. Felt like I had been beat up by a street gang. Prince may have been partying like it was 1999, but I damn sure wasn't.

So using natural poison (well not so much since it has been mutated for a stronger high) in an unnatural way that knowingly will cause lung problems is better? Heh... dude.

Crap seems to be breaking up. A couple nights of half decent sleep have helped. Talked to a doc friends hubby and was told there are a few different chest colds running around also. I figure if I can get 2 more nights in I can whip this thing. I hate taking stuff, but since I am coughing myself awake about every 4 hrs, might as well take the dosage. Weather is being weird though so Sat Afternoon I will have to be out in the nasty for 4-6 hrs.

FWIW, my wife is an ER Physician and is seeing more flu this year than ever....

    She offered the following.

    Public service announcement:

This is a wicked flu season. Even with the flu vaccine you are minimally protected. As you might know, I’ve been practicing emergency medicine for @ 20 years. I’ve seen more influenza positive patients this year than any other.
Influenza is spread by respiratory droplets (coughing and sneezing) and some protection is offered by wearing a face mask if around people suspected to be positive. It is highly contagious so please protect the people around you should you become ill.

We have miraculous things now like drip IV’s and chicken noodle soup. I was kidding about the smoking pot thing, but I’m still inclined to believe that mercury and aluminum sulfides are NOT things that I want in my body.

I was down hard for a day, and then slow recovery, back to work, and some of my staff are out sick now too. The coughing got me more than anything. I did discover if you have too many hot toddies, you don't feel any better, but you don't really care.
