Big Cat!!

ZeeZee Senior MemberPosts: 19,068 Senior Member
Buddy and I went hunting last night to try and clear out some more pigs.  When we arrived, there was only one pig in the field, so we snuck up to 170 yards and did a synchronized shot on him with a .308 and .243 Winchester.  Dropped him on the spot.

Drug him to the edge of the field and waited around to see if anything else would come out.  Eventually spotting a bobcat on a hillside a ways away, we stalked up to 155 yards and shot him with the .243 Winchester.  He dropped as well.

When we walked up to him, I was amazed at how HUGE he was!  Later measuring 54" from front paws to back paws.  Getting the hide tanned and the skull bleached.

I've seen only 2 bobcats in the wild in my life. That one would have made 4 of them. I didn't know they could get that big. That's a trophy for sure.

Wow....If that was a northern cat the pelt would in the $1200 range.

Yeah, if we’d got him next weekend, during a varmint calling contest, we could have gotten $5,500 for him.

    I shot a good sized
one last year, but the .308 Win put a serious hole in the off side and ruined the pelt.
This one only has a nickel sized exit in the pelt. Should turn out nice.

Well, I could swing at that, but the over active auto censor would block me.

After skinning and fleshing, sew the hole closed before tanning. It'll barely be noticeable.

Already dropped it at the taxidermist. Assume they will do so.

My my buddy is getting the hide. I want the skull.

Is there a Boone and Crocket score for bobcats? It HAS to be close if there is a category.

Jaguar and mountain lion categories but no bobcats. Bobcats aren't "big game"

I saw a big one this year but I didn't get the gun up in time. He was the biggest one I've seen on this lease but I'm not going to get into a a match like mines bigger n yours because I don't have a good perspective, But I'm going to say that one you shot is a very big bobcat and I know after seeing the one you shot here and that one that crossed in front of me, they get bigger than I thought possible.

There are several 50 pound + bobcats that have come out of Northern Michigan....the biggest that I have found was 76 pounds taken in Maine..

Bobcats may not be classified big game, but I guarantee the one Zee shot and the one I saw could put a hell of a hurt on a person if they wanted to.

Me neither, but this thread made me Wikipedia bobcats. Excuse me, but Sweet Baby Jesus....that's one helluva bobcat. While not into record book stuff myself, that particular cat would certainly make me curious. Hopefully your taxi-guy had the presence of mind to weigh it before breaking out the knives. That's one heckuva cat!

If I see that big one on my lease again his ass is mine. My taxidermist is wringing his hands to get hold of something like that. I know from experience there's pumas or mountain lions (Same thing)around here but I'm now thinking that a lot of sightings may have been  large bob cats mistaken for their bigger cousins. You gotta look at the ears and spots.. However, if I see a Bobcat at 300 yards I can't really see his spots or make out his ears.

My taxidermist charges $1,400 to full body a cat.

    Yikes!!!

I’m good with a skull and hide.

Yeah me too for that price. I'd love a bob cat rug. It might make a good costume for halloween, just drape the skin over your head, run around growling at people until somebody shot you!

Well, as it was a joint effort, my buddy is getting the hide and I’m keeping the skull.

    Skulls are more my thing.
