Second favorite military round

Of course, the .308 or the -06 has got to be leading. That's a given. Then the 5.56 might be your first choice, but if so, what's the second? My first is the .308, second is either the 7mm Mauser or the 8mm Mauser. What are your choices?

Course the .45 ACP/9mm/9X18 MAK in handguns

I like the .303/6.5X55 Swedish/.30 Carbine/7.5 Swiss and last, but not least the 7.62X54R all fer different reasons.

    first 6.5x55
    second .30-06
    third .308

That is about it for military rifle rounds that I have much experience with. I wont really include 5.56 in the list because to me its a glorified .22. I have one, just not really into the round.

I think some choices the launching platform has a lot to do with our likes and it probably wouldn't matter the caliber beyond being effective on whatever you do with one ..............well besides the Russian Mules, anyhow.

But the Mosins have the cost advantage. The Swiss K-31 and earlier models have the uniqueness of the straight pull bolts and being accurate and well made like the M-96 Swedes don't hurt.

    1) 45 Colt.
For what I use handguns for, none better has ever surfaced.
    2) 308win

When it comes to military calibers, my favorites are determined by the weapons they're chambered for. Also, my favorite military rounds are not necessarily my favorite rounds, I like a few civilian calibers as well.

Favorite military handgun calibers: 1st: 9mm (because of Lugers and C96 Broomhandle Mausers) and 2nd: .45ACP (1911s)
Favorite military rifle calibers: 1st: tie between .308 and .223 (AR10 and AR15 platforms) and 7.62x39 (AK-47 platforms)

Some time back I read an article about the 1,000 meter matches at Wimbledon back in the day....the .303 turned some pretty impressive performances.

Perhaps we can get a good SMLE to Zee and let him see what it will do waaaayyy out there....

The original Broomhandle Mausers were 7.62 x 25. The 9mm came later.

I like almost all military rounds, even the obscure ones like 6mm **** and 7.65 Argentine. Not so much the 7.7, but I've never owned one.

Well, I'd have to agree with the .45-70 for US. But for the world, I've always had a fondness for the 8mm Mauser. My dad and I had a sporterized pair on 1937 vintage Oberndorfs that we hunted deer with in the Wisconsin woods. They were slayers!

    :that:

    Assuming military ball.

I would go with the .308 Win because of the M14 and variant platforms.

I would choose the 9mm as an alternate to .45 ACP. I'm not considering cost or some of the other factors.

Exotics and Uniques are fun but effectiveness and availability are more my flavor. The list goes downhill from here but I have many of the common U.S. stuff also.
