Need a new laptop.

orchidmanorchidman Senior MemberPosts: 7,360 Senior Member
Bought a Toshiba Satellte in 2010 and have been running it since then with only minor problems up until now.
Went to wake it up this morning and it looks like its fried itself.

Fired up my old desktop to do some research and found an article about Toshiba which indicated they are in financial trouble with predictions they might go under.

Now trying to figure out which brand to replace the laptop with..............or do I drink the fruit flavoured Koolaid, turn to the dark side and get an Apple.......................

The difference between a PC and a laptop for 98% of everyone in this world  is that one is small, portable and battery powered.
As far as apple and windows, I ain't touching that.

If you buy a Windows (or Linux, hint hint!) laptop, buy a commercial grade one. Who you buy it from doesn't matter nearly as much as what grade you buy. You'll pay 1.5-2.0 times for it, but it'll last. Those $200-$500 consumer grade laptops are crap. Spend  $850-$1,200 on a good HP, Dell, or Lenovo and you'll be far better off - although Lenovo has been on my "list" for years because of the excessive amount of crapware they put on them - maybe they've gotten better in the last couple of years.

Apple only sells commercial grade hardware.

Looking at an HP 15-BS193touchsmart at the moment.

Got the guys at the tech dept to look at the old Toshiba to see if it could be fixed...........The guy I spoke to looked at it, started laughing hysterically...........paused long enough to call over the other techs, showed them the Toshiba and they all laughed..............They only stopped laughing to talk to each other in chinese before cracking up again.......Then all the sales staff came over to see what was going on ( most of them were good looking Asian girls btw) and they all started laughing.............then the manager came out of her office and she started laughing..........

Then the manager asked me if I was married......

There must be a joke somewhere in all that..............Lol

If I had the money for a super laptop...I'd still stick with Windows. The Microsoft Surface ones are really nice.

Bought my MacBook Pro in 2011 and just listed it for sale for $450 because I bought my new iPad Pro and a new Mac so I didn’t need it anymore.  It sold in 2 days and I had 4 buyers stacked up waiting to give me money for it.  Just food for thought...

By the way an iPad Pro with a keyboard is a GREAT replacement for a laptop.  My company supplied laptop has never left the box it came in...

    My computer woes continue.....
Dragged out my old desk stop HP and fired it up. Worked great for the first 24 hrs and started to catch up on paperwork.......then it refused to recognise my profile and wouldn' t accept my password on Fri night.
Deadlines for filing income tax  and gst are just around the corner and I have till wed to get them done.
The good news is that the techs rang me about the dead Toshiba....and they have extracted the hard drive, placed it in a case so that I can use it as an external hard drive on the new laptop.

Oh, and my new HP laptop should be in store today. Went with the one mentioned in an earlier post.

If they split their sides  laughing when they saw my Toshiba, they will die laughing when I take the desktop HP in .........Its' still running Windows 7.......

Screwed my back moving stuff on Friday. ....agravated it doing a charter sat to the point where I bailed on Sundays trip.....if it wasn' for bad luck, I wouldn' have any luck at all !!!!!!

I have a cheap laptop,a Lenovo for about $250.  The only thing I do on it is cruise the web and it works fine.  Windows 10 is great, just takes a little getting used to.  My only problem with the Lenovo is the Shift key which is a little too far right so I have to think about it and seek it out rather than automatically press it with my little finger.

I have 4 Apple computers I bought used, and they all still work. One of them was made in 2002. The others are 2005, 2008 and 2010. Two desktops, a laptop and an Imac, which looks like a monitor only, but has all the computer guts concealed in the back of it. I've owned Apple units since 1989 and all of them ran fine for at least 10 years before crapping out. They are practically immune to the normal PC crap that runs around the internet, and with proper instruction you can do your own upgrades. You couldn't pay me to own a PC with its clunky, virus-prone OS. OK, done spouting!

As a long time user I get a little tired of the denigration of Apple stuff by the PC crowd. Yes it's expensive, yes you may not like the OS, or maybe you just don't like the Apple brand for whatever reason. I think on this subject I can speak with some knowledge that the Apple hardware is second to none, and the longevity is outstanding. They are now, and always have been user friendly. I've used PC's before, while owning the Apple brand, but I just couldn't get to actually like the way the OS works. Most of the people I know that own PC's are always complaining about the thing stops working after 4 or 5 years, or that something corrupted the OS, or that it is virus or malware infected. This rarely happens in a modern Apple computer. There is a reason for the high price of an Apple...they're just plain better!
You can even get an Apple computer to run PC software by just getting an add-on program that makes it compatible with the Apple OS. I believe the Apple OS is now based on the UNIX platform.

As a former Apple employee- I agree with everything Wambli and MMD have said.

My wife's old macBook 17" from 2007 is still chugging along just fine.  The Trashiba (Toshiba) laptop my work gave me 3 years ago is just about ready for the target range.

I've been running Apple for years, since "Jaguar". The UNIX base is the primary reason I came to Apple, their OS "Upgrades" annoy me, but then again, so do Microsoft's. Like I've said before, I have the same agreement with Apple as I do with Microsoft: They keep doing stupid things, and I keep cussing at them!

And yea, their hardware is commercial grade, I've only had one real annoyance in that regard: A 2005 iMac that only went 9-1/2 years - power supply problems.

I don't need a lot of computing power,  just roaming the net.  An occasional word processing.  I've never owned anything but PCs.  If you do a lot of graphics, I've heard, Apple is better.  The reason few if any viruses have been targeted toward Apple, my PC master guy tells me is because there aren't enough subscribers to excite interest.  Compared to PC, Apple only represents a small target.

Yes it's true that Apple is better for graphics, and for ANYTHING printing and publishing related. Apple is the industry standard for those industries. I know this because I used to work in it. World-wide, Apple is 95% in printing and publishing. The ones that use PC's to create output files for an imagesetter or a computer-controlled press will probably adapt them for use on one of their Apple systems by converting it to a PDF and outputting it that way. It is true that a lot of these dirtbags that write virus programs for PC's do it for the sheer numbers of PC's, but since Apple changed their OS from OS 9.x to OS 10.x that has a UNIX base, I have not encountered any viruses or malware on my computer since 2003. That is the reason you can't find an anti-virus program designed for a modern Apple computer. They just rarely need one.
