..........wears this mark.

......and looks like this.

.......according to the factory. But, reality is different.

Yes folks, after 20 years, I own another Savage rifle.

I will spare all the details as to why I do. You can read the two other threads about my quest for a beater/loaner rifle. Suffice it to say, this particular rifle met all the requirements I needed and had the features I wanted.

Well, my LGS got 3 of them in stock. My friend at the shop allowed me to look at all 3 of them and pick out the one I wanted. Initially, I was unimpressed that two of the rifles had warped stocks. What I mean, is that the barrel was almost touching one side of the stock and Hell and gone from the other side. I like that this barrel has a generous free float. What I DON'T understand, is how you sell a rifle that has a sliver of barrel clearance on one side and an ocean of clearance on the other. Can anyone say........Fit/Finish? So, I picked the one rifle that had a relatively centered barrel in the stock.

Then, continuing on with my detailed physical inspection prior to purchase.........I notice that the rifle I want...........has a freaking broken front sight!!! Right out of the box!!!! So, here we stand with the one rifle that has a relatively straight stock and it also has a broken sight. Awesome!!!

My friend, being the cool guy that he is, immediately pulls out his cell phone and calls the Savage Rep. Tells him the issue and a new front sight is on the way. Well, at least they fix issues quickly. Hopefully, I'll have a front sight next week some time.

So, I get this beast home and confess my sins to CPJ. Who, being the caring friend that he is............IMMEDIATELY opens his pie whole and tells the whole world!!!!! Note to self...........don't share deepest, darkest secrets with CPJ.

I start playing around with the rifle at home, and keep hearing a rattling sound in the stock. Well, I was going to take it apart anyway to once over the insides. Remove the stock and out falls.......

.......the broken piece of front sight! How nice.

I will say, the trigger came factory set at 2.5 pounds. That was actually kinda surprising to me. I was also pleased to find that it was easily adjustable. Unfortunately...........it's only adjustable to 2.25 pounds. Well, either way, it's not a bad trigger. Though, the swing lever in the middle feels and looks like it was made out of a soda can. The trigger has a toyish break to it. Not as nice a factory trigger as Tikka and assuredly NOT as nice as most other aftermarket triggers, I will say it beats socks off other factory triggers.

Anyway, I mount the scope I'm going to use for range testing and hit the range this afternoon. Cleaning the barrel first, I notice the normal crud in the bore from the factory test fire. Then, I clean the chamber. Oh goody! Rust!!!

On the left, you will see carbon from a fouled barrel. On the right, you will see rust from a......you guessed it....rusted chamber.

Can anyone say......Fit/Finish?

So, I have her all cleaned, locked down, adjusted, and ready to go for the accuracy test. Here she is with a Leupold MK4 3.5-10x scope on Burris Xtreme bases and Leupold MK4 rings.

To test fire, I had 5 different factory loads. Here are their results:

Federal Premium 150gr Nosler Ballistic Tip

Hornady 168gr A-Max TAP

Federal Gold Medal Match 168gr SMK

Federal Gold Medal Match 175gr SMK

M118 Special Ball 175gr

Remember, I never said that Savage rifles weren't accurate. This is pretty much a bone stock rifle that I only took .25 pounds off the trigger pull. Obviously, it likes the Hornady TAP ammunition the best. The others, it has varying degrees of pretty good, not bad, and alright. Which is unfortunate, seeing as how I intend to use the 150gr Ballistic Tip and M118 Special Ball in this rifle. But, as a factory rifle, out of the box. She shoots. So, that'll work.

The bolt has a tendency to hang up and stall while loading a round from the magazine. I push it forward and when the round hangs up halfway, I have to back up the bolt and hit the round again to get it out of the magazine. Now, this is loading slowly from the bench. I'm sure I could hammer that sucker in one cycle in the field. All I'm saying is that it's not a smooth feed. The bolt has a sloppy feel to it, as all factory Savage rifles do. Again, kind of toyish. Can anyone say Fit/Finish?

During cleaning, I became aggravatingly aware that the recoil pad was not centered on the butt stock because my knuckle kept hitting the shelf between the stock and recoil pad.

That, was incredibly annoying!!!

Can anyone say Fit/Finish?

While we are on the subject of recoil pads. This one is very soft. Like squishy toy soft. Like tacky rubber soft. Like hang on your shirt sticky soft when you try to mount the rifle quickly from standing soft. Very comfortable when shooting as far as recoil taming, though.

Speaking of recoil, it is not painful. Being a .308 Winchester, you would expect that. But, the rifle does have a bit of bounce to it as seen in this video.

I will be adding one of these when they get in stock.

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/147...cm_vc=wishList

Well, knowing what she was capable of, the scope came off and I set her up in her final configuration.

An Aimpoint Comp M3 wounted with a Leupold MK4 Ring.

Why, you ask? Why would I mount an Aimpoint on a sub MOA shooting rifle? Because I can then mount this behind it.

And do this at night. (pardon the crappy phone pic......it looks much nicer in real life)

Which, was kinda the whole reason for the rifle. A plinking/hunting/loaning/beater of a rifle that I cared nothing about. Which.........it is.

I've got a practically useless 22-250 M 77 (old style). It's been bedded, has a heavy barrel, the barrel is floated and it will shoot 2" groups at 100 yards. I'm not a fan of the 77, but am at an impasse on what to do with it. Got a nice stock, a great trigger. Which indicates, the trigger at least and the inept bedding, that I'm not the first to have problems with the rifle. I'm considering rebarreling it with a Shilen barrel which will put me way over my budget and in a caliber I don't particularly like.

I won't sell a turkey rifle. The sucker buck stops here. It's not a bedding problem, and in fact I don't think you can pillar bed a 77 (maybe you can.)

So what do y'all think? I'm not looking for a BR rifle, just one that will shoot 3/4".

Good idy? Long as safes aren't made mandatory, I reckon.

Killeen, TX
Dear "Mr. American"

As your Congressman, I would like to update you on a piece of legislation I recently introduced. The Secure Firearms Act of 2013 (H.R. 1883) will help keep more firearms away from unauthorized users and prevent many cases of gun violence with no threat to the 2nd Amendment Rights of law-abiding citizens.

The most common factor in the mass shootings over the past years is that people who should not have had access to firearms managed to acquire them anyway. We don’t attempt to address all the reasons for that in this bill, but specifically target better security of firearms by law-abiding citizens through incentives, not mandates.

Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX28) has joined me in introducing this bipartisan piece of legislation. He and I both agree that while nationally there has been much discussion over how to prevent mass shootings, there is no debate over the need to promote responsible firearm ownership. As a concealed handgun license holder and strong supporter of 2nd amendment rights, this is a common sense first step towards increasing access for Americans to purchase devices that will prevent the misuse of firearms. While this legislation is not meant to be a ‘fix-all’, this is a bipartisan idea that Congress should immediately act on.

Mass shootings at Columbine High School, Virginia Tech, Tucson, Aurora, and Newtown all involved people who should not have had access to firearms. The most recent Newtown tragedy revealed the shooter’s mother passed the federal background check, legally acquired weapons, and bought a safe, but apparently left the safe unlocked and the weapons exposed to her mentally unstable son.

As responsible gun owners, let’s make sure our weapons are more secure in the future. We can use this legislation to kick off a nationwide push to put gun safes or security devices in every home with unattended firearms by the close of 2014, and then let’s push for everyone to use them. That’s a specific goal that will reduce gun violence by a date certain, and a goal that Congress, the President, and the firearms community can unite behind.

The Secure Firearms Act includes:

1. Up to a $1,200 tax deduction to purchase a gun safe and/or security devices through December 31, 2014.

2. A prohibition on the IRS use of tax deduction claims to produce any form of gun owner registration.

The White House officially called for improving safe gun storage on January 16, as part of President Obama’s initiative to reduce gun violence, writing “The President believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms . … .But this right comes with a responsibility to safely store guns to prevent them from accidentally or intentionally being used to harm others. To that end, the President will launch a national responsible gun ownership campaign.”

In addition to the President’s call for safe gun storage, the Secure Firearms Act is endorsed by the National Rifle Association, Gun Owners of American, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation.

The issue of firearms is emotionally-charged, over which it is sometimes difficult to find common ground for many Americans. But this is one bill that will reduce illegal firearms use, is constitutionally-sound, paid for with appropriate corresponding budget cuts, and should be supported by all sides on this debate. I encourage the President to immediately endorse this legislation, and for our House and Senate leaders to rapidly move this bill to his desk. If we succeed, we will show the American people we can work together on tough issues to do what is right for the country.

As a district judge for over 20 years, I remain dedicated to protecting the basic rights our forefathers established. I cherish those freedoms and the right to protect myself and my family. As your representative in Congress, and a member of the Second Amendment Caucus, I respect the right of gun ownership, and I will remain steadfast in protecting all Americans’ Second Amendment right to bear arms. If I may ever be of service to you, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Two days of full auto fun. Next year is the 25th anniversary. The red car on the right side of the berm was nearly sawed in two by a watercooled 50 cal and 30 cal.

I got to shoot an M79 for the first time. Put the chalk round through the window at a little over 100 yards. My legs still ache after spending 2 nine hour days as a Range Officer. But my grin has not lessened at all.

I went to a LGS to check out a revolver I've been trying to convince myself to buy. I asked the guy how long it had been there and he told me "a couple of weeks."

I happen to know that this gun has been there since at least February, based on the stocking number. In fact, about a month ago it had also been there "a few weeks."

I'm going to call the manager later and find out how long it's actually been there, but if I get "a few weeks" again I'm never setting foot in the store again.
