Bullfrogs!?  Seriously!?  I thought we were engaging hostilities against the French!!!! (That would've made for a short weekend)

I've tied and flied some cranefly imitations into shallow pockets in the cottontails, only to have a frog jump it..............now I'm thinking about lashing my air rifle to my U-boat.................  

I can't remember eating frog legs, but they sure make an excellent live bait for bass down here.

I too have that idea. I need to shoot mine at night, at close range, to see where it hits. I WISH there was a GOOD way to put a red dot on a Sheridan pellet rifle.  I have the only mount that they make, and it loosens up like crazy. A lazer would be the kitties whiskers for frog shooting at night, but alas that is verbotten in MO.

If you dont get to the ponds a few weeks before season opens, youll go hungry. Where I went, its a bear to get to them. Thats why they are still there. On the river, they are mostly safe. You either kayak/canoe, or go all Green Beret on them and wade the chest deep water to get them. I have done that, and its a blast.

Frog huntin' and giggin' is fun! Since it's legal in Mozambique to hunt with a .22 I got a suggestion for ya that is quiet and effective. A small single shot .22 like a Chipmunk loaded with Colibri ammunition is quiet and effective on frogs. It's small size makes it right handy in a small boat. Since the Aguila Colibri is only propelled by the priming compound without any powder, the noise is about the same or less as a pellet gun. That pellet gun ya got is plenty good for frogs, too.

Down here there's no season and no bag limit. Gigging is so predominant, that it's unusual to see an airboat without a frog chute.

I thought about the Colbris also. There were a few that I just couldt get to last night, that were back up in an undercut of the bank. NO WAY to get them with the pole, and a gig would have been iffy also. The .22 would have had them in the basket though.

If it that part of the river wasnt 2-3 feet of water, with 10-12 feet of mud, I would have just waded out in it.

Oh, and a side note, I wish i would have bought a sit on top yak, instead of a sit in. That way I could get out, and then get back on. Live and learn.

Yep, June 30 to Octboer 31 is the season. You can only get them after sunset. Says them.......

Ill follow the season, and bag limits, but if its 7 PM and I see one, its mine.

Daily limit is 8.

I've seen quite a few custom setups. Instead of a bag tied to the chute, sometimes there's a little ramp positioned to dump the frogs in a cooler. There's a lot of commercial frogging in Florida.

Gotcha. My buddy had a similar type rig for fish. It was a box, that had a slit in it like your pic. The gig went in the slit, and you pulled it back to drop the fish in the box.

I'll have to give them a try. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I saw a real bullfrog. We see lots of the brown toads, but the frogs are more elusive.  The toads make great bait also. A hook through the lips, and toss 'em out above a submerged tree........

You know when you eat an amphibian..................the Jarheads around here get all riled up till they go get their own dinner.....................the cannibals.............

tell us more about the preperation of the meat...do you skin it? or cook it with the skin on? seasoning? what ind of breading? i am intrigued...i didnt even know there was such thing as frog season, let alone people that looked foreward to them...

Anyway, like I was sayin', Frog is the fruit of the pond. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it...... Dey's uh, frog-kabobs, frog creole, frog gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried................................. There's pineapple frog, lemon frog, coconut frog, pepper frog, frog soup, frog stew, frog salad, frog and potatoes, frog burger, frog sandwich. That- that's about it.

Way I've always done it is skin them, remove the big nerve that runs down the leg (they'll jump out of the oil if you don't), and marinate them overnight in Italian Dressing salad dressing or something similar.  Flour 'em and fry them in 350 degree oil.  That's Farenheit for our foreign relations. 

Mess O legs, cleaned and skinned........salt, pepper, maybe some garlic,cornmeal.......... dip in egg mixture.......dredge in seasoned cornmeal......fry up 20-30 mins.......serve with eggs and biscuts. Breakfast fit for a king....Ken

I dont take that vein out, I told the kids they would jump when you fry them. Of course they didnt believe me. So I had to show them.

You chop off each leg at the hip?  Looks like it.  We learned to clean them by putting the knife blade in just in front of the hips and then bringing it forward until the you reach the end of that fused section of the hips/spine (looks like a big rectangle on the frogs) then cutting up.

thats the only way to cook them, if you do it differently it takes all the fun out of it

a few years back it was easy to go gig some grandaddys around here, now all the ponds we go to are empty

but reelfoot lake still offers all you can eat for 10.99......... i dont know how they do it cause i can break em on what i can eat

A guy walks into a restraunt, and asks the waiter if he has frog legs. The waiter says yes, so the guys says "well hop your to the kitchen and bring me a steak."

reminds me, back in the day we would go out gigging, or shooting with .22 my dad always offered to clean them for us

we usually came home with a folgers coffee can full

found a pond one night that had so many frogs in it we ran out of containers, o we started taken them to truck and dumping them out in the floor board of the old 70 model chevy

got back to dads house and asked if he would clean our frogs as usual he said yes, when we finally found all of them out of the truck, they filled up a 55 gallon garbage can, dad was shocked but also was happy, most of them were big enough to save the front legs on

That's what we do for flounder gigging. You take a plastic drum and cut it in half, cut a slit like that in it and screw it to the bottom plywood floor boards in the boat. You gig a flounder, turn around and lay the gig in the slit and pull the gig back, dropping the fish in the drum. That is if you don't drop your air motor, prop and alternator in the bay first.
