Need to Find Used Savage 110 Stock for 270 - Cut it down for my 8yr old

I am having a hard time finding a used Stock for a Savage Model 110 in 270. I want to be able to cut down the stock so it will better fit my 8yr old. I want to retain the current stock so we can put it back on when he gets bigger.

This is a gun that was given to him by his grandfather so it will be something we will keep in the family.

Any ideas out there? Am I going about this all wrong? I am trying to do this with out breaking the bank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Let me go out to the garage and check...I think I might have one you can have. What's the spacing on your action screws? It WILL make a difference. Pre-Accu trigger stocks differ from Post accu-trigger stocks....

Well, good luck. There may be some around because some people like to put them in aftermarket synthetics like B&C. Put you an ad in the paper. Saying it here is your first step. Maybe somebody here has one.

If not, and you can go with wood, try Boyd's. You can get a Boyd's Laminate for about $83 delivered to your door. But that's the unfinished version. However, they give good instructions on how to finish it in Polyurethane and it's simple. Anyway, have fun.

Gun Parts Co. has all sorts of them, in various conditions and prices. One is listed with "dents, dings and scratches" that would be ideal for a cutdown and refinish job. Here's a link:

I will check those out as well! I think I am having a hard time cutting down a $120 stock, which is what I am finding new. Really would like something <$50?

    So one other question...

What is the difference in "STAGGERED FEED" and "CENTERED FEED" ?

The magazine lips are shaped differently on some rifles. One type brings the cartridges up under the bolt one at a time on-center, and the other overlaps the cartridges about halfway and the bolt picks up the top one and feeds it slightly off-center. The shape of the magazine well in the stock is probably shaped differently to accomodate the different magazine designs. Just a guess, but your .270 is probably a staggered-feed type.

That makes alot of sense! I do believe your correct that the one I have is staggered.

    Thanks!

Usually, bolt action rifles that fire rimmed cartridges like the .30-30, .303 British, .45-70, .22 Hornet, etc. use the center-feed design, and rimless cases like the .30-06, .270, .308, etc. can work OK with the staggered feed.

Re: Need to Find Used Savage 110 Stock for 270 - Cut it down for my 8yr old

Most centerfire bolt guns based on a Mauser action will be staggered because a majority chamber rimless cartridges. The top cartridge will be either slightly left or right of the centerline of the bore. As you work the bolt and chamber a round, the next round down will come from the opposite side and so on and so forth. This allows more rounds in the magazine without the magazine pertruding below the belly of the rifle, giving it smoother lines. Most all Savage 110s I've ever seen were of staggered magazine design.

One question though. Are you sure you want to give an 8 year old a .270 Win.? Mine kicks the Dog Doo Doo out of me. And a if you cut it down to fit him, it's going to be lighter and kick worse. That's a good way for a youngster to develope a flinch. I would start him off on something like a .243. Actually, I wish the .250 Savage was being chambered in more rifles nowdays. I think Savage is the only company that chambers it. But it's a honey and will kill as good or better than the .243 because you can load bigger bullets. Anyway, you might want to look into another cartridge for you son. I love the .270 Win. and have killed lots of deer with mine in 46 years. But It is a bit much for a kid.

Don't believe him, he's only being facetious. He hates the .270 but loves to call it a kids-woman's gun.

I was thinking of added a thicker recoil pad once it was cut down...

The .270 was given to us so that why its being used... I would prefer a .243 as he is moving from a .223.

If you reload, it wouldn't be all that hard to make up some light loads for it. CPJ has his little girls shooting a 45/70 with little difficulty.
