Thread: Feeder lights?

    Feeder lights?

Anyone ever used any of the feeder lights or "Hog Lights" that hook up under a deer feeder so you can shoot the darn hogs without having to resort to spotlights that spook off the wiser pigs? Any suggestions, recommendations, or ones to stay away from?

    Re: Feeder lights?

I've heard guys talk about using them, and I gathered from what was said that they work just fine.

    That's all I've got, though.

I night hunted on a Texas ranch near Victoria a few years ago. The feeder was circled by a series of solar charged lights. When the hogs came in all I could make out was the silhouettes in the dim light. I still had to pull a spotlight to make the shot. A full moon in a clear sky would've been better.

I have no idea what the brand or type they were.

With a little electronic tinkering, somebody with some electrical knowledge could rig up a controller to gradually increase the brightness of a light when a motion sensor detected activity at the feeder. Start out with a dim glow and take several seconds to crank up the light to shooting brightness. Something similar was done by a fraternity with the lights in their "parlor" back when I was in engineering school. A guy could bring a date in and turn the lights on- - - -normal brightness. In 30 minutes, they would automatically dim down to almost full dark! The same technology could be used in reverse at a hog feeder.

I was thinking of building my own set with scavenged parts. The pull of the bailing wire and duct tape is strong with this one....

well, the $1000 price point for an NV scope that can see over 60 yards does not compete very well with a set of $30 solar powered Christmas lights:

Plus, we are wanting multiple guns on target at the same time. Lights are going to work better.

Great Idea. I've shot at hogs with a spotlight but it's a pain to deal with. As for just seeing a silhouette in dim light, it's not like there's a whole lot of things out there that have the silhouette of a hog. If I see his outline under the feeder, one, I'm gonna know it's not a people, a cow, or a deer, and Two, he's one dead pig!

Do you have access to a Tri-Tronics bird dog training setup? It would be easy to use one of the trigger channels for a remote bird release to operate a stepper switch and ratchet up the light voltage with a rheostat a notch at a time.

    Re: Feeder lights?

Dont need to use a rheostat to gradually increase the light. Just have a bulb/light completely encased in a light proof box with a string to open a slide or door. (Use an lcd light to cut back on the heat)

Connect the string to a low geared fishing reel, when you hear hogs at the feeder just slowly wind the reel and increase the light gradually. Use a red lense which will make the light less harsh and not destroy as much of your own 'night vision'.

If you use a door, make it spring loaded so that you are pulling against the spring to open it. It will give you better control over the speed......

If you use something like an LCD brake light, you can make up a self contained box with battery included. The light can stay on permanently, the only thing that you will then have is a string to your shooting position. Does away with electronics........

You could even use something like a lenser H7 headlamp light mounted in a box set on 'flood' not 'spot' as even on high it would last for at least 2-3 nights and provide plenty of light with 3 AAA batteries.

    ( just thinking out loud)
Still enjoying the trip of a lifetime and making the best of what I have.....

I was paying to be there (one hog per hunter), so I wanted a decent sized porker. Hard to judge size from just a silhouette.
Side note: if you do not want to track a hog in the dark, put a 405gr 45-70 round in it's ribs.

Snake, I have a lot of family in Palacios. When I visit, I try to squeeze in a hog hunt.

I saw these on a bow-hunting forum. The consensus seems to be that there is no need to tint the lights. Supposedly, they last for about 7 hours after the sun goes down. You could buy one and try it out at home - I may do it myself.

Man, Small world. I go to Palacios all the time. I hunt between here and Palacios. Other than the Boon and Crockett Rattlesnakes, it's a nice place. It definitely has some good fishing holes in the bay there and the Tres-Palacios River is a good fishing spot. I just killed a 250 Pound Boar on my lease yesterday. Lots of hogs around there.

Also, one of my favorite Priests lives there, a guy named Jim Abernathy. He used to be the Priest at St. John's Episcopal there.

Anyway, so this won't be a total thread hijack, I am very interested in some feeder lights of somekind. Deer season is almost done here and hogs will be the only thing in season, because they're always in season. I have a Q-Beam light, but it's a pain to handle a spotlight and run a gun. My problem is the opposite. I don't want a big bore, I want a nice 80-100 pound sow or even some piglets so I need to be able to differentiate.

Good info. I may run down to HF and buy a few of those and try em out on the feeders.
