I have never heard much good about them. I would go with a Ruger or a Marlin.

I owned one that I easily put over 1500 rounds through with only a rare jam. The newer ones have an improved mag. A Volquartzen Hammer makes the trigger pretty nice for $40 or under. The accuracy of mine varied widely. Mine would average a little over a half inch @ 50 yds for 5 shots with a couple target grade loads. (Wolf MT and Fiocchi Target). With run of the mill, plinker grade ammo it would shoot a "pattern" at 50yds as far as I'm concerned~2" or more. Typically they will outshoot a stock Ruger 10/22 accuracy wise. Mine was notorious for giving a first round flier, and ultimately the reason I let it go.

Got one....ditto on the stock plastic mags....the die-cast ones are better for some reason. Mine prefers CCI mini-mag fodder....other than that.....pretty decent for a plinker.

Yes!....and if you venture disassembly......the double rod/spring thing will drive you batty!

Good thing is Doc....it'll put in dime-size groups for a semi-auto at 50 yrds.

Mine works fine. It likes Federal ammo a lot, then Winchester. Ironically, it hates Remington .22LR in the bulk packs..

That's for sure! Not too great with federal bulk pack either. Mine seems to do ok with Aquila stuff. Very hit and miss with different ammo. Put the Volquartzen hammer in which has taken the trigger from atrocious to tolerable. If I could do it again I'd probably go for a 10/22 instead, but overall not a terrible plinker with the right ammo.

He must have been an older version. Newer ones (got mine 4-5 years ago) have aluminum mags that are pretty reliable. The 30 round mags I have are plastic and pretty crappy though. Usually stick to the factory 10 rounders.

Friend of mine got one around 2003; it was the grey laminated wood & matte nickel plated model.

Never performed even close to a plain-Jane Ruger 10/22, although using high-end ammo. Poor accuracy (Both iron sights & scope), terrible trigger, multiple jams & malfunctions, magazine issues and poor ergonomics (Even worse for his left-handed owner). After lots of tweaks and alleged solution tryouts, finally sold it and filled that space in his safe with a 10/22T which he likes a lot.

If you're looking for a relatively cheap removable magazine-fed .22LR rifle, a Ruger 10/22 is the best choice for the money. If you want the best quality/price ratio regardless of the loading system, get a CZ 452.

    Re: Remington 597

I have one and love it. Took it to the SE shoot and never had a problem with it. I also have the factory 10 round mag that is metal and a cheap 25 round banana mag. It loves them both. The key to getting them to work is tightening the twin guide rods to the right and exactly matching tension. And besides the trigger, a factory one will outshoot a hopped up 10/22 any day IMHO.
