Actually... not a bad idea. Cats are pure murder on ground-nesting birds and small mammals. If people keep the bloody things in the house, you have no issues, but if they're allowed to free roam or go feral, you can have problems.

The answer is to import Barred Owls. They are prolific kitten killers, in my personal experience, and catch a lot more rodents.

Implement the "100 yard Rule"....if a cat is more than 100 yards from a farm/house he's fair game...

A friend had the "tail" rule. If it's tail can't touch the barn, house, or equipment, it was fair game.

Re: New Zealand environmental advocate launches campaign to ban cats as pets

I live next to a national park and bird sanctuary, AND happen to hate cats, so any feral feline roaming the premises is shot (I use a .177 pellet gun and spitzer-pointed hunting pellets and aim to the "boiler room"....too risky using a .22 or head shots); cats with collars denoting pet status first get one warning non-life threatening shot. I've been witness to the damage they can cause to wildlife and their nests.

If a serious study really determine that they are a significant risk to endangered native species in protected areas or the wild, they should be eliminated; owners should be forced to fix their pets or pay huge fines, and adoption promoted as the 1st. option for getting a cat. I have 4 rescued dogs and all are neutered to avoid unwanted puppies, and NEVER wander free, so I expect other pet owners to behave with responsibility.

Read that yesterday. While he sounds like a nutter, there is some truth in what he says and I agree with some of it.

I already do. All the owners of the properties I hunt on know my rule about cats and accept it. Hasnt caused any problems to date but I get tired of carrying a fold up shovel sometimes................

Had to invoke the authority of that rule a couple upland seasons back when my buddy's German Shorthaired Pointer ended up with a collarless, feral cat tenaciously attached to her face over a half mile from the nearest farm house. Upon seperation, a load of #2 steel shot and a heavy boot to the kitty's throat took care of the issue, but not with out a lot of hullabaloo and one very pissed off dog.

Re: New Zealand environmental advocate launches campaign to ban cats as pets

Despite the "cute kitty" syndrome that helps the critters infiltrate the homes of small children and women, I became a cat person (more of a mutual respect thing than a real "love" of cats) specifically because of their "natural born killer instinct".

We brought our first cat into our home some nine years ago because we had a problem each year with mice. A pregnant momma mousie would decide to move in to our old rental home, under the kitchen cupboards, and usually in the spring and fall we'd start finding evidence of the infestation of the little rodent family. We tried spring traps, which in one instance broke and trapped a juvenile's leg without killing it (resulting in a very interesting phone call from the wife while I was at work as she and the two preschool girls were on the living room couch while that trapped critter tried to haul itself and the trap underneath the fridge!) Next try was sticky traps, which caught a number of the target rodents but were a hassle to lay down and avoid due to the small size and layout of the kitchen.

Finally, in spite of the "no pets" rule on our lease, we adopted a cat (who is a guy's buddy through and through and still rules the house to this day) who turned out, after his first exposure to a living, furry snack, to be a mousing machine. That "killer" nature eliminated our problem for the most part, and even resulted in a larger kill from an invading rat that made it into our basement from an abandoned house next door. At that point, I felt that I'd forgive a lot of cat foibles to have an in-house seek-and-destroy killer for that kind of pest.

Don't get me wrong...I've got cats...3 of 'em, and they're members of the family....but they live IN THE HOUSE...their feral kin get shot on sight...

Re: New Zealand environmental advocate launches campaign to ban cats as pets

I know a guy who lives in the country and keeps horses. He adopts neutered cats from the local animal shelter to keep in the barn. He does this as they are good mousers and keep the mice and rats at bay. Eventually, coyotes or some other larger predator will get them, and he will replace them with yet another neutered, adopted kitty.

I guess it works pretty well for him.

We also have our own kitty, which has been neutered, and is a family member.

But, that being said, I understand how un-neutered feral cats can quickly multiply (they're good at math, I guess), and be a real problem.

It's also been said that big cats are dangerous, but a little... oh, never mind.
