    Which Grade Garand from CMP?

So, got my new C&R FFL in the mail today (let it lapse like a dummy over a year ago.)

First thing is a Garand. Which grade do you recommend for those who have gone the CMP route?

Field grade H&R and Springfield, 525.
    Service grade, same manuf. 625.

However, the other listings in Service grade jump up to 925. Just better metal and wood? That's all it says. Don't understand why they would be in the same grade if the value is that much higher.

I'm looking at 5-600 bucks. All I got right now. May could swing a hundred more, but that'll do till March. Advise me, oh learned ones.

I was looking at this same thing also interested in the bolts they had with new barrels, I know it would not be "traditional" but there are some great stocks out there even synthetic (collective gasp) and lot's of options for trigger assemblies

I say Service Grade. That is probably the route I am going to take this spring when I get my Garand.

I'd get the best one I could afford.

Why the higher prices? Read the descriptions. The metal's in nearly new to excellent condition. New stocks and handguards, not original ones.

How far are you from Anniston Ala.? If you're a couple to three hours away I would recommend you go there and ask to look at the different grades and see what you like. I've seen some service grades that were as nice looking as rack grade. It all depends on what you want and what you intend the rifle to be. If it was reconditioned (Which most are) it hasn't really lost much value if done at the arsenal. It's like a civilian rifle. If you have it reblued by a local gun smith, it loses value. But if you have it reblued by a certified factory dealer, it's as good as original as far as its collector value goes. Most of the WWII Garands especially, have been reconditioned at an arsenal, probably several times, well two or three over say 65 years, and the ones in good shape still hold their value. Of course, a general issue rifle is not going to command the same price as a National Match.

Higher prices have new wood and possibly new barrels. I say go service grade, but I got a field grade and it's still decent (they were out of service grade at the time)

think about what you want to do with the M1. are you going to make it LN once you get it or are you just going to shoot the snot out of it and leave it as-is. If all youre going to do, is to shoot it, then get the least expensive and spend the rest on ammo since ammo prices have gone thru the roof.

also, even if you change your mind, you could have it refinished, but it will cost you.

If you plan to go I suggest you get there at least an hour before they open. Last couple of guys I heard from who went say they were either out of nearly everything or what they had on the shelf when they opened was gone in about an hour.

As someone else said purchase the most expensive you can afford. I personally want one of the reworked ones for about a grand. BUT then I already have one...

    Thanks all.

I'm about 6 hours away, too far to drive, really. I'll stick with the C&R route, it'll only cost me shipping.

Oh and ilove22s, I don't think I've ever shot the snot out of anything. ;) I just want one to shoot some, break out of the safe once in a while to show off, especially when me and the boys are watching Band of Brothers or something. I've just always loved Garands. Oddly, only ever fired one... Knitepoets at the SE shoot.
