Personal Defense for a dis-abled person?

Hello I'm new to this site but I've read many of the interesting issues that come up, I am partly disabled an live in the U.K I have a conviction for possession of cannabis which ruined my career in teaching (that's another story). I went to private school in a lovely part of Surrey, I never saw myself becoming like this, scared in my own house and unemployed for the foreseeable future.
I was burgled luckily I was not in at the time but it did come to mind my health being what it is even if I was in Id have had to sit there an hope not to be attacked. The police will not grant me a licence as my conviction (11 years ago £15 of cannabis) even with my personal references I was told I am not eligible to own a handgun licence an probably never would be. However owning a shotgun licence is a whole different matter but as I don't want a 4 foot long bulky thing its not something id even consider. The laws over here are bent in all the wrong directions and benefit very few people it seems when it comes to defending house/home/family/life. If anyone can give me any thought's Id be interested to hear if anyone else is in a similar situation. Thanks DD

Up close and personal I would say and ink pen or a pencil. Apparently the plain old BIC hard plastic version can be driven thru plywood. Or one could take a plain ole wooden pencil and uumm fortify it a bit by soaking it in some slow cure super glue.

I have a couple of cold steel delta darts. But I see they are restricted in the UK...

How about a cane and learning some cane fu?

I would reconsider the shotgun if I were you. That bulky thing may save your life and with some practice, may not seem so bulky.

What are the rules on shotgun configuration?

Depending on how disabled you are, if a firearm is completely out of the question, (I'd never, ever discount a shotgun for home defense, though), you might consider a machete in one hand and a double-edged dirk in the other.

I have a couple of friends in Derbyshire who are not only very active hunter/shooters, but both of them are retired constables. Do you live anywhere close to them? I'm pretty sure one or both of them would be willing to help you set up an effective, and also legal home defense plan.

    Shotgun is your best bet.

I'm just guessing you're in a house and not in an aprtment. Fortify your home. Steel core doors with multiple deadbolts, and barred windows with large hedges/bushes planted in front of them. And a dog. A BIG dog. Or two. Better yet, EMIGRATE to America.

Horselips, OP stated that he has a drug conviction, that likely rules out him even being able to travel to the US, let alone ever become a resident or citizen.

I second the suggestions for a large dog and a couple of knives.

Recall there as a famous case in the UK of someone getting in a world of trouble for defending his life with a legally owned shotgun.

No clue on the specifics of your disability, could you learn some form of martial art, aikido, krav maga? Carrying a knife inthe UK I believe is a NO-No but at home with the correct skills at close quarters a very sharp kitchen knife can be very effective, so a cane, ax, hammer, baseball bat but training is a requisite even if it is training meant for you particular disability.

i gather that you can carry a cane in the streets.
If this post is non welcomed, I can always give you a recipe for making "tostones".

Why do these one-post wonders ask a question and then disappear, never to be heard from again? Pretty rude, IMHO!

Because of the limited number of shots, perhaps he would be restricted to a double barrel max (?), it seems that the bayonet or knife and hatchet fighting a la Mel Gibson in The Patriot is making a come back?
As an older guy I think this is an important thread. After all we are only temporarily able bodied, age and injury catch up to us all. I realize, for now, we in the US can use a handgun, and I believe that is an important argument for continued production and use of these weapons (Liberals want to leave the elderly and disabled defenseless! would be turning their rhetorical tactics back on them.) I also believe it is important to learn how to defend oneself from any position anytime, anywhere. (End of statement of the obvious.)
