Ever get one of those weird ideas that seem like it might be kind of fun? Well, it happened to me this morning. Again. Maybe one of these days the voices in my head will be quiet.

Anyway, the following thought crossed my mind.

In Texas, there is a wide discrepency between city/town names and the counties in which they reside, or even in the name of the town that is the county seat. Here are a few examples.

Pecos is the county seat of Reeves County.

About 40-50 miles east of Pecos, is Ft. Stockton, which is the county seat of Pecos County.

Makes perfect sense, doesn't it.

As you travel east, you find Ozona, which is the county seat of Crockett county. However, the town of Crockett, which is in east Texas, is in Houston county. Houston, aka Sam's current hometown, is the county seat of Harris county.

There's also Abilene, the county seat of Taylor county, and the town of Taylor, which is in Williamson county.

El Paso is actually in El Paso county, but the city of Colorado Springs, Co. is also the county seat of El Paso county. I still don't understand why someone decided to name a county El Paso that far north of the already established city.

Oh well...

There's probably more examples of stuff like this in Texas alone, as there are 254 counties in the state. If you know of any, please share.

Yeah, I'm with you on this. Just wonder sometimes what they were thinking or if they were. But guess communicating great distances weren't near as easy as today.
But where I live, the county south of us is Chester and the county seat is Henderson. East of us is Henderson county. I live in Madison county, but the city Madison, TN is actually in Davidson County. I am sure there are more but those came to me off the top of my head.

Wichita KS is not in Wichita County...it's located in Sedgwick County
Wichita County is located 262 miles west, the county seat is Leoti...

Well, you have Kansas City, IN MISSOURI (Along with Kansas City Kansas)

edited to add: my city and county share the name of a long dead indian chief, though they anglicized the spelling replacing the "k" in Tuskaloosa with a "c"

The county seat of Decatur County, TN is Decaturville, and the county seat of Meigs County is Decatur.

Michigan's capitol, Lansing, is in Ingham County.. there is no Lansing county, nor is there a city named "Ingham"
the City of St Joseph is in Berrien County.. St Joseph County's seat is Three Rivers. Cass County separates the two.. Cass City, is an incorporated Village in the Thumb region, 3+ hours east

Wake Forest University is located in Winston Salem NC.. Not in the city of Wake Forest NC which is 100 miles east.

Carson City, NV is NOT in the Carson Valley (where I live) but located just to the north in Eagle Valley.

It used to be located in Ormsby County but city and county merged.

Now, the denizens of CC have to leave the "County" space blank when filling out on-line things, which causes them to be kicked back.
