Take your time on that barrel. After just a stock and Timney trigger, both Zee and Wambli have had exceptional results. Timc has been using very heavy .308 Bullets in his 1:12 twist Hog Hunter at subsonic speeds and has kept them stable. Don't sweat the barrel.

Glass? Again, I really want to check out the Vortex and have heard great things. Ernie speaks highly of them. It sounds like you are on the right track and I would love to hear your feedback on the scope.

    Re: Remington Gun Porn!

Provided there are no bumps in the fund, I should have the glass just before Christmas...So what about 2.5 months... The hardest part will be getting a good day to shoot. They say Sub zero air is dense...but I tell you, on a low humidity Sub Zero day here, the air is crisp, thin, and awesome for shooting. The bad part about it is the illusion it creates. A 500M object will only look 250m-300M away.

I tell ya brother, if you have a cabelas or sportsman there, go in and check one out. I was impressed. IT was the first time I could readily see the clarity over the scopes I have used in the past.

I haven't pushed anything heavier than 162gr yet. I am going to see if I can get some one to do some loads up for me us to about 185 or so and see how they handle. I haven't seen how light I can go yet. I almost picked up a box of 120gr to see what would happen. But at 26in in barrel, I was worried about spinning them apart.

I do know I am going to break my barrel, I hope you are right and I get good results without replacing a barrel and I will just go ahead and break the Factory barrel. The three months it is away will give me an excuse to pick up my next project...

    Re: Remington Gun Porn!

    Thank you.
I really see myself still growing in the LR game.
Will be working on the nuances of mid-range wind, and some of the tricks of wind itself, like subtle cues of switches, etc., when shooting at LR.
I videoed myself at Nationals, and noticed some inconsistent behavior, most of which involved being too hurried to shoot again.
A left-hand action would make it easier for me to be more smooth, but it can be done using a RH action.
Progression of passion....The desire to shooting small groups started with traditional handguns from 83-85. It progressed to bottleneck cartridges from 1985 on, beginning with a 10" TC in 222 Rem, and then 14" 7mm TCU. PD shooting and antelope hunitng is where I started, so distance was a part of the process.
Bob Milek's articles was a great source of inspiration for me early on.
There was not really a drive to shoot distance, but rather be precise as possible. Then that moved to be able to take animals cleanly in the field from field positions at further distances. I ran into dissatisfaction with the TC fairly quickly while hunting Mule deer, which moved me to my first XP-100, which was a full blown custom, tight-neck 7-08. The TC was quickly sold and money used toward the XP.
Since my XP's were stupid accurate, it began to move into the mode of being able to cleanly take an animal, a little further, and a little further, etc...
Then it started getting out of hand
Doing a fair amount of LR pding sure helps with field shooting for game. Steve and I just kept experimenting with things for field rests, since there wasn't really any systems set-up for XP's. Learning from others, learning from mistakes, and lucking into other means simply becasue we were willing to try things outside the box.
Sometimes the greatest motivations for specific things was done after a chorus of people would tell me that it couldn't be done with a SP.
That provided a strong motivation at times. I really wished I could have had some good mentoring at the beginning, that would have saved me a lot of time.
I remember the first time I heard someone explaining MOA-I was so confused
In hunting at mid-range and LR almost all of my kills early on were done in excellent conditions, where shooting form and correct drop were the main concerns.
Constant practice with good equipment and good form are so important.
Shooting out to 600 yards is not as nearly as difficult as many people think, if you have decent conditions, and a weapon that is easy to shoot.

Cull 'gun'. Remington 1187. This is the one I plumb wore out and now use for spare parts...................( its the one on the right. The one on the left is younger and I took it along to learn good habits from its elder)

'Junior must have paid attention to the lessons cos here is a pic of his first 'solo' outing................

.......and he just got betterer and betterer lol...........

Here it is in its natural environment...........

Not content with just waterfowl it decided to knock one of these over.........

Bought a second hand one to act as a backup.......here the 2 of them are showing a berretta how to shoot Canada geese..........

Might as well throw this one in of the neighbours heckling the 1187's over the fence as they posed for the last pic.....................

And here it is in action................

I also have an 870 with an extended mag which takes 9 shells.

    Re: Remington Gun Porn!

Speaking of what's in the gunsafe.......the only other Remingtons I have are a 597 .22 and a tackyed-out 870 which started life as a gorgeous Wingmaster.

Checking Photopuket, I see it has upgraded but I lost all my previous photos which is probably still there under another name and password that I can't remember.

Yes, I'd try a new stock and bedded action with a aftermarket trigger. Chances are, it'll shoot like a house afire without having to rebarrel.

By the way, the Savage Hog Hunter has a 1-10" twist. Which, is one of the reasons I got one. If you rebarrel, I prefer a fast twist.

Yeah zee, and that would be the driving force behind a new barrel...not so much for the accuracy or precision, but to get a faster twist for rounds. But that is a ways off before I think more about crossing that bridge...

As has been mentioned I have done a bunch of SPS drops into B&C stocks for myself, family and friends over the last few years and I can tell you ALL of them have ended up consistent sub MOA shooters with nothing but a decent bedding job.

Wambli and Zee...Did you have to Re-bed or bed again when the stock arrived to ensure a good fit for your action?

    Most every stock, I bed.

    This is most recent one,

did this without bedding. Just dropped in the stock, torqued to 65 inch pounds, and using factory ammo.

So no, you don't always need to bed the action. But it can't hurt when done right.

Keep in mind, the stocks I use have full length aluminum bedding blocks.

It is a Rem 40X, chambered in 308 Win.
    It shoots very good!

Mostly All my stocks have full length aluminum bedding blocks so I just bed the recoil lug with some epoxy putty. Enough that when I drop the action into the stock there is no movement at all. Then I torque to 50 in/lbs and that is enough to guarantee sub moa, in all cases MOA or better with factory match ammo and usually around .5 MOA with the good stuff. My .223 is sub .5 MOA with anything I've fed through it with the good ol' factory barrel.

Add more in the flavor of Devcon Aluminum Puddy. The stock maker has to allow enough tolerance in their block to accept minor discrepancies. Basically, a drop in/drop out fit means slop or looseness. Yeah, you can usually torque that slop out and get along fine. But, I prefer to bed the slop out and create a push in/wiggle out fit. I should be able to take the action screws out and the stock remain on the action when suspended. That, means little to no slip in recoil.

Very easy to do if you use putty.
