    Guess I'm a 10mm Fan Boy now.

Picked up a Glock 40 longslide in 10mm Auto this weekend.

Nothing fancy. It's a Glock. It goes bang.

4.5lb trigger and fixed sights from the factory.

A friend gave me three boxes of ammo from the late 80s or early 90s.

    175gr Winchester Silvertip
    180gr Federal HydraShok
    180gr Winchester JHP

The Silvertip is the only ammo actually loaded to 10mm velocities. The other two are castrated to less than my .40cal ammo.

    http://vid26.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9steslo1.mp4

    175gr Winchester Silvertip = 1,305 fps
    180gr Federal HydraShok = 977 fps
    180gr Winchester JHP = 963 fps

Accuracy was acceptable for a Glock. But, I think I can do better with aftermarket sights or a Red Dot.

I also fired some .40 S&W ammo through the 10mm barrel. It did alright as well.

    http://vid26.photobucket.com/albums/...psv0gienva.mp4

I am going to replace the front sight with a H-Viz fiber optic one. Then, I am likely going to install a Vortex Venom Red Dot sight on the MOS mount that comes with the gun. A 3.5lb connector will be installed as well. Some sand paper decals and a 9" Lone Wolf Barrel should round things off.

The factory barrel will likely get relegated to .40cal usage while the 9" barrel is used for hunting.

It ain't a small gun. But, I can run it fine and it'll primarily be a hunting gun for pigs at night.

Gotta get all my loading material in hand and I'll start making some wicked loads for it. So far..........I'm not impressed with the 10mm ammo I have. WEAK!!!!

    I don't think it's a short frame.

It's not as comfortable a frame as the 34/35, but it is not unbarable. I consider it a special purpose gun and therefore, I can adapt to its use. Were it relied upon to be a daily gun, it would be annoying.

15 rounds of 10mm that is night capable for shooting pig herds...........I can live with it.

Once I get some "rip-roaring" loads made up for it, a 9" barrel, an optic mounted and the grip tape, I think it'll be a pretty Bad Ass pig killer.

I imagine you will be in the .41 Mag ballistics ballpark and the cool thing is it will be from a manageable semi-auto pistol.

You know it, Iffin you can kill coyotes at 150 with a 40, you can kill a lots of hogs way yonder out there with a full bloomin' 10. I didn't realize there was a 10 with a 9" barrel. I would love one of those. Now that's Hog Medicine!!!

You might want to check multiple sources for your data.

I have found that 10mm data varies GREATLY. i.e. 10.1, 10.4, 11.0 for a max load with the same powder and same weight bullet depending on the source (Alliant and Nosler online, Sierra printed)

Some of the normal sources seem to have apparently settled on the "10-Lite" when their 10mm data is hardly faster than the 40S&W with the same bullet/powder combo.

Hodgdon seems to list the highest data with Longshot powder and 180gr bullets (looking at Sierra/Hornady/Hodgdon Manuals). So, I'll start there and go as high as the gun will let me.

I just put one of the Beavertail Backstraps that came with the Gen4 gun on and it feels considerably better!

I'm trying to decide if I want to go with a full set of adjustable FO iron sights or if I should instal the Vortex Venom red dot. I like the simplicity of the iron sights and it will mostly be used with a laser at night. But, the red dot would aford more accurate shooting if and when it is used in the day time.

    Thoughts?

Well, I hate the notion of battery driven fussytech on handguns, and you're not the sort that needs to "crutch up" poor skill with gizmos. I would lean to adjustable sights on this rig given the wide range of ammo you plan to be shooting through it.

That said, you've got three or four extra inches of extra protrusion on this 9" tube you're talking about. Certain things you might attach to that protrusion could get in the way of the view through standard-height iron sights.

The barrel would stick 3" out in front of the slide. Nothing will be attached to this barrel.

I may be screwed, though. I don't see the 9" barrel on the Lone Wolf site anymore. Hope it is just out of stock and not out of production. It was there a week ago!!!

Get the red dot. And long barrel. Otherwise it's just another dumb glock.

I am probably going to get an extended barrel for my G23c that will be the same length as a G22 barrel and get rid of the factory barrel porting.

More velocity and no upward blast. Win!

I am going to be envious if you do what you say you are going to do with this gun. Now that you are a 10mm fanboy, we need to get you to drink the .41 mag Kool-Aid.

FWIW, BBTI lists a Buffalo Bore 180 g JHC ( I believe that's jacketed hollow core , but I am guessing ) at over 1500 fps from a 9 inch barrel. That's almost 900 FPE.

All the big bore (.45 & 10mm) Gen4s are short frames; Glock tweaked the dimensions a bit to reduce the front-to-back circumference on the grips. That's one reason I waited so long to get a Tupperware 10mm; the other was a rumor of a centimeter M&P that never happened.

Interesting that the beavertail backstrap works for you. I tried the smallest one and didn't like it. And my hands are normal!

But now you have me thinking about a Vortex Venom. Dammit.

Cool, I didn't know that about the frame. Guess that is why I like it better than the G20. Learned something new, thanks!

Being a larger frame than my standard Glocks, I can't choke up on the grip as well. The smaller beavertail allows me to choke up without adding undue length to the grip.

Yeah, the Venom is mighty tempting. Haven't decided yet.

Re: Guess I'm a 10mm Fan Boy now.

The Venom is a good economy dot along the lines of a Burris FF3. No features to speak of, on/off and brightness. The dot is clear but not super bright. Mine works ok in the sunlight but nothing like a C-More. But for night use, it should be good. Might want to consider a smaller dot if you're going to shoot longer distance like you did w/ the .40. The other Vortex (spider?) is 3 moa, same price.
