AR\15 scope mounts, whats my option?

    Just ordered this:
    http://www.midwayusa.com/product/224...ProductDescrip

Wasn't exactly what I wanted, but real close. But since I had real money, and they had one IN STOCK, its on its way. Actually, other than the brand I would not really change anything. And I don't know that it makes much difference on brand either. It has no forward assist, and no dust cover. Which makes me no nevermind. I have no intentions of jamming a round in the chamber if it wont go in all by itself.

Now I need to scope it. FOR NOW, it will get a Tasco 4x20, because.............I have one. I was planning on getting a scope too, but since Uncle O screwed me out of over half my bonus thats on hold. The Tasco will work till I get something better.

So the question is....what mount? I'm not against just using standard high rings for the time being. I just need it to work, Ill worry with getting exactly what I want later. I dont need detachable mounts, and I dont need anything adjustable for more elevation. My plans of shooting F-class are out, there are no ranges close that shoot it, and the one that is 3 hours away shoots a bastard version of it that I am not interested in. So, this rig will be destined for killing paper and varmints. I wont have a shot over 300 yards, most likely. Something simple and easy is great. Oh, and inexpensive is a plus as well.

Save yourself some money...with these mounts there's no need for a riser..

    get yourself a Burris P.E.P.R..

    http://www.burrisoptics.com/arpepr.html

    Rock River High Rise Mount,

    http://rockriverarms.com/index.cfm?f...ategory_id=385

or the Leupold Integral mounting system

    http://www.leupold.com/tactical/prod...unting-system/

All are reasonably priced, but more importantly they are solid as a rock...I run P.E.P.R.s on all my ARs...but would use the RRA without a second thought....

I have the same upper with a 20" barrel and 8T. I love it and actually prefer the slick side because it doesn't beat up the brass. I put these Burris rings on mine and the height is perfect for a good cheek weld with scopes in the 40 to 44 mm objective lens size. http://www.midwayusa.com/product/810...tte-extra-high

I took the rig on a PD shoot to Nebraska and ran 400 rounds through it. Even after all the shooting/loading/unloading and travel it was right on the money when I got home.

    Look at you go!

You can add a base thing, and med rings. Or get the phone pole rings.

I have a set, and installed a couple, of Weaver Tactical skeleton rings. I like them. Good and solid, look neat. Price is right.

I'm not sure about high or extra high. Probably extra.

Or you can be super cool, get the six hole ones.

Well, because of the AR's stock-to-bore geometry, you're gonna need something pretty tall just to get it at the same height as your eyeball. One of our sergeants has this:

    http://www.americandefensemanufactur...iew/product/8/

Which is a very solid and repeatable QD mount. They do a few different versions for varying flavors of eye relief. I'll be going this route when I get bored with the irons.

Hmmm. Guess I should have made this thread before ordering the upper and saved the shipping, huh?

See a couple posts above please.

I had no illusions of it being light. I knew it would be heavy. I looked at the 20 inch version as well, but figured 4 inches wasnt going to make it THAT much lighter. Not in the grand scheme of things anyway.

If Im hunting, its on sticks of a bipod. If its one the bench, its on a bag. Its all good in the hood. I just hope it shows up in a non-descript box. My warehouse guy will FLIP if he figures out what it is.

No problems, if you find it unwieldy, just nip 4 inches off the barrel and re-crown...or you could get silly and have the barrel fluted...or...

He seems to be as pleased with it as I am.

Then add these and the scope of your choice and have fun with it

Thats what I am getting. I like the Burris P.E.P.R., but do not like the rails on top.

Add a set of Warne high rings to the GG&G riser and you're set up right. I really like the GG&G riser; it fits the upper like a glove and looks good to boot. And there's plenty of room to move the scope and mounts to suit you.
Sure. I've seen people like you before. But I had to pay admission.

Didn't they used to make those without the silly rails?

CPJ is getting his mojo back! Cool. That upper is going to be sweet mated to that lower with the light trigger. When are we getting a real scope for it?

Probably after we get a new bike. And after much thinking about it as well. Gotta make up my mind as to exactly what it is I want from this contraption.

I am not sure if you have an adjustable buttstock, but a rifle that should be a shooter, adjustable stock, and fairly cheap low recoil .223 ammo would make a great rifle to get the girls shooting at 100 yards. It would be a huge confidence booster for them as well.

Yessir, it would. I dont have an adjustable stock, but the oldest is probably close to being big enough to get behind the fixed A2 stock thats on it.

Re: AR\15 scope mounts, whats my option?

That is the upper I used on my "Long Range AR" project, I think that 4x is going to be way to little magnification for it.

I originally had a Larue Tactical mount on that rifle which is great as you can take it off and on and the zero stays but I have better use for that on another rifle so I listened to the folks here and got a set of Warne scope rings and those things are rock solid!

Best scope rings are the Badger Ordnance but they are expensive and prone to rust!

I got lucky and got a Leupold 6.5-20X on a trade which is what I am using on mine, sent it to Leupold for some upgrades but for half that money you could get a Vortex 6-24X which was my intended choice before the Leupold came along and everyone says they are wonderful scopes.

The next best bang for the buck down the ladder seems to be the Millet LRS 6-24X 56mm, only thing is that it needs 35mm rings and comes with a set but no idea on how good those are and who else makes good rings in that diameter..

I planned on one of those tacticool looking Magpul adjustable stocks, my brother gave me and an A2 after he swapped that for a retractable job on his AR to hold me over until I could get the Magpul but the A2 works great and will stay there, I would put that money instead on the scope and/or a great trigger.

Re: AR\15 scope mounts, whats my option?

    Bruchi makes very good points.

I really like the P.E.P.R. but you aren't going to be switching optics on that upper to much (unless you upgrade) so the Warnes make more sense. I have a set of GG&G I also like.

The Leupold VX-3 6.5-20 in 40 or 50mm would be sweet! The Nikon, Vortex, Millet and others in that range would be where I'd look. That magnification range seems about what you need with your youngins shooting maybe at the 100 yard mark and you not strectching it pass 300 unless things change.

Last, with that upper and what you are planning to use it for the A2 makes perfect sense unless you go for the PRS to be able to adjust for the youngins @$250 or so.
Once is an accident, Twice may be a coincidence ... Three Times is enemy action.

My thought EXACTLY. Cause thats what I did. No fancy stuff, just quality stuff that makes it shoot.
