    Ned's Hunting Thread

Finally got enough energy to go out scouting for Ducks. A few wood ducks around.

Jumped some and they flew up stream and then came back past me.
    I fired a shot-------I missed.

Got a roadkill squirrel----that is all.

Mr. Squirrel cleaned out my live trap and did not trip it.
Oh well, he won't be as cautious next time.

Good luck out there, Ned. I hope you can get into the ducks thick here soon with the artic blast that has hit.

Ohio's awful waterfowl opportunities have all but completely shelved any waterfowl hunting plans I've had for a while now. Hopefully I can live vicariously through you ntil I get someplace with decent numbers.

Went out to jump ducks, they were really jumping wild and my shooting was really poor.

I managed to come around a point and get in front of some ducks a few times and got close in where I should be and managed
to drop these 4 Ruddy Ducks.

Click on the photo and maybe it will go to photobucket with a bigger pic

Nice work, Ned! We had our duck opener here and there were a lot of birds flying, but a sky buster behind us made it really tough. He wouldn't take pot shots at any birds that started finishing in our decoys. We ended up with 3 geese and a mallard between me and a buddy.

    Re: Ned's Hunting Thread

I heard a lot of shooting on the main river and it seemed to be moving up river reasonably fast, no way they were paddling.

From how goosey the ducks are, I think they are running on the motor into the flocks and shooting.

bunch of fishermen getting in the way, too.

3 geese and a mallard is pretty good though.

It was a nice sunny day and no jacket needed unless running fast with the motor.

    Shot 50% today------- 2 ducks.

Talked to the wardens today and they know about the running and gunning with a boat and what housing development the perps live in
plus what the boat looks like. They have to see them in action and are working on it.

    Re: Ned's Hunting Thread

No rain today so I went out on the creek, nice sunny day; except we had wind---too much wind.

I got to the protected ramp and found that the wind had been blowing the water out of the creek; the water level was too low to launch the boat
as the ramp is on a narrow Branch and the boat would have stuck in the mud on the other side, so, off to another ramp about 10 minutes by water
from where I wanted to hunt.

The wind was strong enough so that when I was paddling and a gust hit, the boat would nearly stop and seem to stay in the same spot for a minute or so
even though I kept on paddling. The strong wind also aided the diving to get off the water faster as well.

Fewer ducks around today, though I did get 2 before I threw it the towel and went home.

    Re: Ned's Hunting Thread

Kids and hunting guns make for interesting times.

When #1 son was 11 or so I bought a 20 ga 1100 for him. That worked for him a year or two and he decided he needed a 12 ga.
So we got another 1100 which he still has and uses. I think he confiscated mine and I had to get the new one; because at that time I bought a 1100 with
a 3" chamber that turned out to have a hole in the barrel where the front sight pin was.

Remington wanted that gun back and I opted for a 2&3/4 chambered replacement.

But, now that he is 50, he had decided that a 20 ga would be better for quail and rabbits.

So guess what, I no longer have a 20 ga 1100 in the house. He is happly hunting quail with that older gun and shooting some in west Texas or the next state over.

    Re: Ned's Hunting Thread

    Nice day on the water today, but, not many ducks and they still are goosey, indicating no new birds have moved in;
except for the one Bluebill I saw.

A couple of small flocks made the mistake of feeding in a couple of coves that let me get near them.
I used some Blindside shot today, one because I had some from 2 yrs ago and two I wanted to see if it would be more effective
on longer shots. It was not; regular super X steel in #1 shot is as good or better and cheaper.

    Bagged 3.

    Re: Ned's Hunting Thread

I now have most of what I need for this season, tags were sent and did not get delivered, I contacted WRC and they resent such.
Yesterday bought my base hunting license at the PX and ordered my federal duck stamp from WRC and got a temporary E-Stamp by e-mail.
