    Morakniv "Companion" knife review

Last year, I picked up a Morakniv "Companion" model to try out as a cheap knife. Amazon was selling it for $14, i had always been a fan of scandinavian style (or 'Scandi' if you want to act like a cool knife guy that knows the buzz words) knives, but had never tried a Mora. It had good revews and a great reputation, so... what the hell.

I have now used this to gut, skin, and fully quarter out my last four deer. Here is the amazing part- I have not had to hone or resharpen the knife the whole time. After finishing a deer, a few hits on a leather stop will return it to shaving sharp. Before this knife, I would use 2-3 knives to process a deer- as one got dull, I would swap to the next one. Now, one knife, one deer. This thing is awesome. The blade is harder than heck, the handle is well designed and comfortable, the sheath is very nice (but noisy), and here is the great thing: Amazon is now selling it for under $11:
    https://www.amazon.com/Morakniv-Comp...words=morakniv

Go get yourself one. Put it in your stocking on Christmas morning. Get a couple for friends.

One downside- it is NOTa stainless blade. It is high polished, super hard high carbon steel. So, if you leave it next to a sink to clean it later... and someone who shall remain nameless tries to 'help' by cleaning it and leaving it wet... it WILL discolor and rust. However, it did not take too much time with some scotchbrite, denim with jewlers rouge, and leather recovered it nicely.

I'll get pics up in a few moments.

Seriously, this thing outperforms knives that I have that cost 10 times as much. Get a few. Pretty sure I'll be getting several more to give as gifts.

I have a few of the heavy duty versions (Orange handled mostly so I can find them easy) ... 1 in each vehicle's tool kit, 1 in the shop, 1 in the kitchen utility drawer and I am sure I missed 1 or 2.

I bought a couple of these too, I was going to donate them for the kids raffles at a DU or Turkey Fed. banquet coming up, I think I am keeping at least one, I got them for under $10 each at Sierra Trading.

There only two things I hate. People who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch.

But they made a decent video.

    HOLY COW.

Would have to be a DIRE situation before I abused one of my knives like that. The fact that the Mora survived all that is simply AMAZING to me

I just ordered 3 more of the Companions, and wife decided, "I need one of those for working out in the yard", So I ordered her the 0.5" shorter one with the red handle.

Why the different one for her? So I don't find MY knife dirty, dull and beat to hell only to hear, "I thought that one was mine"

Exactly. Of course no idiot would treat a knife like that, but the damn thing held up with aplomb.

    Re: Morakniv "Companion" knife review

The torture test was interesting, but meaningless to me, because it told me nothing about how well the edge holds up under normal use.

On the other hand, bullsi saying he processed 4 deer without even a touch-up is a great test. The best I have ever used was my Benchmade Griptilian, which did two deer before the edge started degrading. A few strokes on a steel and it was ready again. This knife appears to be superior to that, so I'm buying a couple, at eleven bucks apiece, on bullsi's say-so.

If you get the carbon steel and don't mind it not being bright and shiny, do a vinegar toning and it will help slowdown rust. It, to me, gives it a nice color tone that looks cool.

The knives came in today. According to my wife at.least 1 is VERY sharp. She opened.mine and sliced her thumb open trying to get it out of the sheath. Guess I need to kill a deer and try it out.

If you want something other than an ugly plastic handle....you could either spend the extra few dollars and get the blank blade, or, melt the handle off the cheaper knife.

I put one of those in a screwdriver handle and gave it as a gift. Great blade
