    What is the smallest cartridge...

You've ever taken a deer with?

Vamintmist's post in Zee's thread got me to thinking

Instead of hijacking his thread, I decided to start a separate one.

    For me, it's a 223/5.56.
    This little spike

was adequately impressed by the performance of of this Nosler 64gr Bonded bullet from ~150 yards away

it was a severe quartering towards me angle and I got ~ 30" of penetration.

I used it because of the argument of the 223 being too small for deer. Figured trying it myself would give me factual data on its effectiveness.

Will I use it again? Undecided, but I know it WILL work if I decide to use it again.

So, what's the smallest/lightest cartridge you've taken a deer with?

44mag is the smallest and only metallic cartridge I've ever used. The rest were black powder muzzle loader.

275 Rigby/7x57 is too small for elephants, but I doubt anyone ever told Walter Bell that.

222............up until I got a 204 a couple of years back. The 204 ruger has now taken about 9 deer including a Fallow Buck at over 200m with a shoulder/body shot.

Power wise, I suppose a 30-30 out of a contender.
I have taken both a pig and a cow with a .380 to the head.

Re: What is the smallest cartridge...

This year, I used a 13" pistol in .223 Remington and 80gr A-Max bullets to take a doe at 140 yards.

Used a 6" Revolver in .357 Mag with 158gr XTP to take a doe as well.

Re: What is the smallest cartridge...

I posted this in Zee's thread as well:

For the, the .243 is as small as I've gone for deer, purely due to opportunity. I have had a .223 in the woods with the intention of taking a deer with it a few times, the opportunity just never came during those times.
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

    Huh. Forgot about that.
So, one bad idea. Pales in comparison to all the good ones.

.32cal flintlock using a 40gr-45gr patched round ball over 30gr of 3f. Probably about the same as a .22mag. In my work I've busted wounded/cull Whitetails and feral hogs 80-120lb class without major problems. Shot placement is the key! I like a double lung shot....if it can't breath, it ain't going far!

One Delta Sierra eliminates all the Bravo Zulus you have ever gotten.

Re: What is the smallest cartridge...

Honestly, 30. I have shot deer with a bunch of different stuff, but a lot of 30 and then up. I have reloaded for stuff that has taken deer down to 6mm, and If I can get out next year and put one in front of me, the intent is 45 out of the trapdoor. I have had a back burner desire to take one with the old 222R, however this new semi auto huntin thing is going to put the NM rifle in my hands in at least one Ghog field. I might be tempted to do deer IF I blood the 45-70.

    Meh. It's a 5:1 ratio. 1 awe Shtuff wipes out 5 attaboys.

Re: What is the smallest cartridge...

Depends on what you mean by "smallest". But the two I would consider the least powerful are a .45 Colt with a 200gr GDHP at about 950 fps or a 7.62x39 150gr soft point. Smallest diameter is a 243.

Using the smallest in actual bullet diameter, it would be .264 Win Mag. for me.

.223 with 62gr Fusion bullet has taken two for me. One head shot and one pass through the lungs.

Also one with a .357 Mag using 158gr Sierra JSP, complete pass through the chest.

30-06 as well. Outside of a 270 3 or 4 times, and a .50 cal inline, every gun I've actually taken in the field has been a 30 cal of some flavor.
