Need quick tips for coyote calling

It seems since the new puppy has come home the coyotes are coming around more and more in the evening and at night. I've never really tried to call them in we just shoot them when we see them. I have an old electronic caller that has a 50' wired speaker with preset sounds. I have coyote howls, coyote pups and squealing rabbits calls. it actually lets me make two sounds/calls at once.

Since they are usually in pack in the evening calling out, with what I have hows the best way to call?

    Thanks

Keep prey sounds turned down lower than you might think and try that lip squeak you saw in my wife's video when they get within 100 yards. The closest I have ever had a coyote was when I used that lip squeak in Colorado. We could've pet that songdog!

Also go buy some inexpensive mouth calls. I have had far better luck with those than with an electronic caller.

Really depends on how hard th coyotes in your area get hunted....coyotes that are rarely hunted can be real suckers for the most basic calls, On the other hand call shy coyotes can be really tough and might require something different. This time of year, we're coming on to pup time so a pup-in-distress can be really effective...

A small thing I'll add is don't overdo it. Like with calling in birds, calling too much can spook them.

Pup distress follow that with a quieter sound, squeaks or baby cottontail etc. followed by louder sounds for another 7-9 minutes with the wind in your face if possible- quartering if not and be ready for a sneaky one coming from behind you . 👍

    Play it by ear.

If you think they are in a predation mode, try some small mouse squeaks, woodpecker distresses, etc. Prey sounds.

If it sounds like they are calling to be show offs then challenging them with a few challenging howls and barks may draw in an alpha or two looking to defend the territory.

Change your setup and location often. That stank gwee they sell as "coyote in heat" probably won't attract them, but if you put it out on

some wicks, it will help cover your scent. Try to set up a small distance from your caller, I've had them pass under my stand, coming

from behind me, a few times. Just remember they very well may move in from an unexpected direction.

Not sure what you have for prey down your way.
I've had real good luck using turkey clucks just after dusk.
IIRC you said you have quail..... Trying something with that if you do have them just after dusk may work wonders as well.

A good phone number is always a must......

sorry had to. I have had the best luck with cheap cotton tail and jack rabbit distress calls along with lip squeaking. I was dive bombed by a hawk while lip squeezing once right before I shot a nice yote.
    Dang it, steers try!

I've had good luck with roadrunner calls and painting a tunnel on an upright rock. You can get in a shot or two as they flatten out on the rock face.

This is a good tip: tailor to the prey in your area. I had a coyote run out and attack my turkey decoys at Teach's place in between sporadic calling while actively turkey hunting. If I was ready for it, that dog was dead.

I've had good luck with domestic kitten meows and cries, too, nearer to population centers.
