I know that bread, most grains, sugars, and potatoes are not my friends. Without them I can get easily get down to about 12% BF. With them, because I like to eat and drink sweet tea, I stay around 18%.
I love sweet tea but I sweeten mine with Sweet Drops 100% all natural stevia. It is the only stevia that tastes great but needs to be refrigerated. You can get it at Whole Foods or order online. Seems expensive but lasts a looooooong time. Try it and you'll never drink sugared tea again.

A couple of other things I have learned. All breads are NOT created equal. I see everything from 14 grams per slice to over 24 grams. Read those labels. And always try to get the one higher in fiber as you can deduct the fiber from the carb load for better numbers.

You guys in warmer states, go to the plant store and get a stevia plant. I buy one every year here and grow it until it dies in the fall. I hang up the branches and when dry I grind them into a powder which I use to make the "Sweet" tea. It tastes the tiniest bit grassy compared to the processed stuff but not objectionable in any way.

I have never been a soda drinker, real sweet tea either, come to think of it, sweet drinks have never been a big part of my life. We didnt buy them when I was a kid because they cost money, and NEPA has the best water of any part of the US I have been.

Don't get it from Whole foods. Those clowns ( at least here ) frown on CCW. Plenty of others that will take my money.

    Re: Aint lost a pound

I guess I might as well get in on the fat conversation. I have been going to the gym to work out 3-4 times a week for the last 3 1/2 years. This includes weight machines and cardio. I have not lost weight, but gained some in the last two. I attribute this to accumulating some muscle mass as well as increased eating. I have gained about 25 pounds in the last two years, because I think the lack of testosterone from not using the T-gel anymore and old age has something to do with it, as testosterone has something to do with metabolism. It's the only thing I can think of that has changed since my diagnosis of prostate cancer.

I'm now brushing up against 300 pounds, and I'm starting to worry about it. I went to my doctor last week for blood tests and had requested they include a metabolic function test along with it, to see if that's part of the problem. I think he's going to put me on some kind of weight loss program, but have to go back for the results of the blood work to find out. Meanwhile I have started skipping eating lunch to see if that will help in the meantime. So far I have lost about 3 1/2 pounds so far this week. Only 80 more to go.....LOL

Don't skip meals, not good! Body goes into starvation mode and gets calories from guess where, your muscles! Just eat a lean, high protein lunch, turkey chicken, eggs, etc! Suppliment with protein shakes. Low T will also cause lose of muscle and weight gain. See if the doc will put you back on it!

    Re: Aint lost a pound

Had my official Saturday weigh-in this morning, and no new weight loss. This week the enemy was spaghetti, ravioli, and those delicious damn cupcakes my daughter made. The good news is that I didn't gain anything. For lunch I will do veggies and sardines, dinner will be posole-- light on the hominy and a big salad.

Sticking on the diet isn't all that hard-- I don't miss bread, and since I like so many different foods, substituting one for another usually keeps me happy. I thought I would miss potatoes more too-- actually I decided to go moderate with those. If I have french fries, it is just a few, mashed potatoes-- maybe 1/3 of what I used to eat for a serving while loading up on meat and veggies. I always preferred a baked sweet potato to a baked potato anyway and now I will only eat half of one of those. Fried potatoes have never been a staple in our house in the first place. But I love my pasta! And a little portion doesn't satisfy me. Spaghetti squash doesn't do it for me either, but eggplant parm is pretty darn good.

It isn't that bad. Considering that I use lots of ice to dilute it and it is for 8 quarts of tea-- between 4 and 5 bags per quart, or just over a bag per cup.

That may not be bad with that much ice. I don't like strong tea at all. Coffee on the other hand, as long as it's not bitter it can't be too strong.

I have thought about doing the LCHF diet, but there are problems I need to figure out. First is $$$. Bread and pasta are cheap. Meat , nuts, fish, and vegetables are expensive. Plus buying and cooking for meals for one is a lot more than for four................

Another is gout. Meat, fish, and high fat foods are bad for gout. I take allopurinol for gout, but that causes kidney stones. If I eat more fats, will the stones form quicker, be bigger??

Breads: the darker the better, like rye, or try the P28 I mentioned. Protein Plus pasta, tastes great lower carbs. I used to have gout, too. Cut out processed meats, fatty foods, go lean! Been off the meds for two years and no flare ups! Suppliment fat with fish oils, like Barleans, tastes good and one tsp. has the same as 15 capsules.

JBP-- Bread... low carb tortillas are your friend. They taste the same as regular and are packed with fiber...
    http://www.missionmenus.com/en/produ...hole-wheat-8ct

Cheap fish-- sardines! They are packaged in single serving size, don't spoil, cost $1 a tin and are loaded with calcium and omega 3's. Veggies-- carrots, celery, and radishes are cheap. Don't buy the prepared carrots-- those suck! Buy whole, unpeeled ones. They taste much better and keep in the fridge a whole lot longer. Buy frozen veggies like cauliflower, broccoli, green beans, okra, and peas when they are on sale for $1/pound. Try to shift the family meals to the basic meat/veggie/starch combination and just pass on the starch while eating more meat and veggies.

I am with Big Al on the low carb/high fat thing-- skip the high fat thing. I have read about them but fail to see how "going keto" somehow produces magic weight loss. It still boils down to how many calories you consume vs. how many you burn. Going low carb/moderate fat works because you take in less calories and still feel full. There is solid science to back that up and there is no magic to it.

A good way to demonstrate what I am saying is to go to Jimmy John's site, get a sub, Coke, and chips... then substitute a lettuce wrap for the bread, skip the chips for a bigass pickle, and get unsweet iced tea/water/diet lemonade instead of the pop. You should feel just as full eating either meal, but you cut out several hundred calories by going low carb. Obviously, you have to adjust the diet to address gout, but you can make it work. Here is that menu calculator...

Just to demonstrate, I ran the numbers like that for their Gargantuan sandwich. With the bread, chips, and medium Coke 1535 calories and 157 net carbs. With the lettuce wrap, pickle, and water 764 calories and 10 net carbs. That is literally half the calories by making substitutes.

Either meal will leave me stuffed, and I am a big eater.

I have dropped about 19 lbs in 12 weeks. I have dropped from 235 to 216 lbs.

The secret is measuring your food and staying with your diet range if possible. I eat 1600 to 1800 calories a day in three meals and three snacks and it has worked well for me.

I weigh everything I eat and track the daily consumption in my head and I have about 15 to 20 meals I have planned recipes for.

I have had some of that "light" lemonade before and that tastes (to me) pretty close to the real thing-- or real commercial thing. There is no substitute for squeezing fresh lemons and adding real sugar and water. That said, it is only supposed to have 5 calories or so a serving.

I have not been able to use the T-gel because my Urologist says I should not go back to it until I have a 2-year history of near-zero PSA results. I might be able to go back on it mid-year. As far as not having lunches, I have a large protein shake in the morning with a banana, low-fat milk and Cashew milk with some yogurt in it and stevia sweetener. I don't really feel that hungry not having lunch. I have plenty of fat to draw on for calories. My understanding of metabolism is that the body will draw from fat reserves first, if that's unavailable then will draw from muscle mass. When I got back from the gym today, I was down to 294.5, the lowest I've been since I hit close to 300 after the holidays. I want to lose about 20 pounds first and then will start having light lunches later on.

I didn't even bother with the salad. A bowl and a half of this and I am stuffed. Hominy isn't exactly low carb, but the rest of it is. 20170225_183331.jpg20170225_191711.jpg20170225_192108.jpg

Recipe for CPJ. Way back in the day there was a show on TBS called "Dinner and a Movie" where they would somehow tie cooking a dinner with the movie and do the recipe over breaks. Back when me and Mrs. Jerm were dating, we cooked along with them one night for fun. The movie was "Top Gun" we have used this basic recipe ever since. Every time we cook a pork shoulder, we usually roast it instead of smoking it because we know we can use the roast pork bones/drippings for stock and the leftover meat to make a pot of posole. The whole family loves it!

You also have to realize that all the sugar you normally drink greatly affects your taste buds. I use nearly zero sugar, the only sugar being an occasional teaspoon in a coffee. At first I could not stand nearly anything especially Diet Cokes of any type. The only acceptable ones were Diet Mt Dew or Diet Sunkist (the only orange soda with caffeine), with LOTS OF ICE. Now I can barely tolerate even those as they taste much sweeter than normal.

Walmart sells stevia and monkfruit sweeteners and to me those are the most neutral. You will adapt and get used to them. I really worried about hot coffee and I never had a problem with iced tea, but after a few days, I was used to them.

The thing is, Stevia is a natural sweetener. Some forms of it have a little bit of a funky taste, but I don't find it offensive.

Because sugar is too dangerous. Like sixgun said. The taste is mild and you get used to it. I cannot do black coffee or unsweetened tea

This has been true with me also. Over my Christmas bender I had a bunch of sweets. We made chocolate from scratch-- a whole lot of chocolate from scratch! Like 40 pounds worth. Some was 70% cocoa and I though that was plenty sweet. My wife couldn't stand it because it was so bitter. All I tasted was the sugar. CPJ's chocolate was 70% (he said he likes it really dark) while Wambli's was 60% and considered "semi-sweet".

Anyway, I made a bunch of stuff. Chocolate, homemade marshmallows, graham crackers, and cocoa mix. Normally, I could eat all that without issue. After cutting out all the sugar for so long, most of it was sickeningly sweet to me.

For the most part I can't do fake, low fat, etc etc _________( FITB with any substitute product)
If I can't have real butter, I won't eat the fake crap. Same with sugar. It's either real, or nothing. But then I'm not a huge sweets person. I'll binge on sweets now and again, but I'll go LONG periods of time without sweets. Thankfully sweets aren't a weakness for me.
Diet soda is about the only fake sweetener I'll ingest, but it's already in there. Adding a fake (something other than sugar) sweetener to something? Nope. I'll just eat it without, or do without.

And you're correct mostly. The dirty little secret of the food industry is low fat means high carb EVERY TIME. I'm better off with the full fat version as the carbs are more under control. I almost never buy low fat, with exceptions for certain things like sour cream or mayo on occasion
