How do you explain the concept of "clockwise" to a kid who checks the time on his cell phone?

Hmmm.............start at the top where the on/off button is.........work to the right where no buttons are (on some models) go to the bottom of the screen then left and up where the volume buttons are...........could get very complicated...........at least analog clocks were pretty much universal, round with numbers and hands, and easy to reference to explain something,

Okies who can't tell time? Whodathunkit! They also can't count over ten with socks on.
People who say it can't be done should not interrupt those who are doing it.

Saw a bumper sticker in Alaska years ago,

Happiness is a south bound Texan with an Okie under each arm.

Forget about clocks........they should concentrate on simple arithmetic.

Last time I was over an Okie told me that 8 out of seven kids going to school couldnt even add.

Even a Texan could make such a mistake, when "in his cups."

Tough to draw a good clock face in the dirt with a stick!

Re: Study: 4-in-5 Oklahoma City students canít read clocks

We were taught this in school, 1st or 2nd grade as I recall. I remember entire pages of clock faces that we either had to write down the time they indicated, or draw hands on them to show a printed time.

But since the article references it, I'm all for 24 hour time - even as analog. All my digital clocks are 24 hour, and some of my analog clocks have the extra numbers on them as well.

But I haven't worn a watch in 30 years - I don't like tight things on my wrists. I just make sure I have a clock everywhere I need to be.

In MY book, watches, military medals and wedding rings are the ONLY jewelry-ish things allowed for men to be worn and displayed....maybe you can add a DISCRETE, sober necklace (No Banana Republic warlord/druglord looks please).

Using cell phones to read the time is no excuse, since most allow you to show an analog clock display as an option. But let's face it....eventually such "skill" will be as uncommon as being able to perform decently with a firearm.

Re: Study: 4-in-5 Oklahoma City students canít read clocks

I took a class in the Army back in the 80s called Effective/Creative writing or something. One of the exercises was to write a paper describing an object without any reference to a clock or clock hands like CCW/CW/12-3-6-9 ..........wasn't easy without a clock for a reference that anyone could relate to. So you had to use your noggin and dig into your vocabulary pretty deep to write something that described the object without the clock reference being used.

My watches are all analog except for my Apple Watch and I have an analog face on that one too. All my devices are set to 24:00 times because that's how we do time in my company.

    I'd bet 5 out of 5 can't read a sun dial....

Reading an analog clock is about as useful as learning cursive writing.

I wouldn't go that far, but I do agree that cursive writing needs to go away...

Both are antiquated. We learned to read analog clocks when there were no other options.

I took a machining class in college. The prof insisted we learn to read vernier calipers and micrometers. Once everyone demonstrated proficiency, he said "Ok, throw those away and get digital mics and calipers. It takes too damn long to use verniers"

The curriculum demanded we learned the verniers, but we never used them for inspection. What a waste of time.

We also learned to use a Mannheim Trig slide rule, as far as vernier mics and calipers, i still use them.

Single earring on men is *so* 1980s! Both ears and the bigger the better!

Now if you only have one ear, I could see a single - otherwise...

Whose left or right, theirs or ours? That could be interpreted either way ...............maybe a bandana in the rear pocket too, hanging out................didn't that used to indicate something years ago.......I reckon a man wearing jeans with a zipper in the rear would tip off even the most unassuming

It doesn't matter. Kids who can't tell time won't ever have to. They're too dumb to work, or study, and before long, their Corrections Officers will keep track of their schedules for them.

I'm fine with those guys wanting to use earrings wherever they want; other than speed, food, money or guns, "less is better" though, so maybe one or two in "traditional" places might work (For THEM). Coming from a military family where sunglasses are considered "a hippie accessory", you can understand why I wouldn't go for one.
