    I shot a .270 Winchester today!!!!

    At 700 yards!!!!

My rancher friend made it home this weekend after 2 weeks gone. He needed a break to take his mind off all the crud he's been dealing with. So, he called me and said he'd pulled his .270 Winchester "Coyote Gun" out of the safe and wanted to shoot it.

Seriously........it's what he called his "Coyote Gun"!!! Turns out it started life as a Winchester Model 70 Featherweight many years ago. He had the barrel cut down to 16" so it would fit in the cab of his truck and be put into use quickly to shoot the occasional yote without getting out of the cab. Later, he threw it in a Hogue stock. But, he hadn't shot it in years and wanted to try it out on a whim.

Arriving at his range, we noticed two ground squirrels hanging out by the bench. Well, that just won't do!!!

First kills with the Ruger 22/45.

Now we saddle up to the bench and I ask him what he is going to shoot at. He says, "How about the 300 yard steel?"

"Screw that!", I say. "It's 700 or nothing!"

"I don't have enough mils in the scope", he says.

"Sure you do. How many Mils do you have?"

    "Five."

"How many mils does your program say you should hold?"

    "Eight."

"Put your 5th mil on the target and count 3 mils up. See where that 3rd mil is located on the hillside. Then, put your 5th mil on that terrain reference and let me know when you're ready."

He does and I call his wind for him.

    http://vid26.photobucket.com/albums/...psgphhwmub.mp4

1st round hit on the head of the steel target at 700 yards with factory Remington 130gr PSP-CL from a 16" .270 Winchester and cheap Nikon scope.

Like I always say.........if you can see it..........you can hit it. If you can't..........get a bigger gun.

He proceeds to put 2 more rounds in the head and then we switched out. I corrected on the elevation and he called my wind. Striking the target in the chest.

That's the first .270 Winchester I've fired in about 10-15 years.

The red arrows are his shots and the yellow is mine.

We then moved to his 750 yard target, used the same method of counting up from the 5th mil and finding a point of reference in the brushy hillside to aim at. I called his wind and..............

    E

Eh, I was a little off.

He was a happy camper. He'd never fired that gun that far before. Now, he knows he can.

I feel dirty. I need to go bath in bleach.

Good shooting. Except for the 270 part. Kind of like kissing your sister?

Sounds like a good time! Having never shot at anything over 100 yards, I admire the knowledge and skill required to hit at that distance.

Cool way of getting to the needed hold. To bad you had to sully your spotless reputation with a .270.

Well. . .maybe. At least Zee's friend is using it as a "Damned adequate coyote rifle". Chopped 4-6" off of that rifle and made it tacticool. At least it's clear he knew the round's place.

On that topic, you hear about "entry guns" all the time, but this rifle was modified to maneuver around inside a truck, and indeed would be handy for bailing out of that truck in a hurry. So, as of right here, right now, I am coining the term "EXIT GUN", to be applied to rifles optimized for road hunting or rural home defense that begins at the porch, and the first rifle it was applied to was a .270 Winchester. You heard it here first folks.

Actually, he cut the barrel so he wouldn't HAVE to exit. The point being, grab the gun off the rack, maneuver it around in the cab, point it out the window, kill the coyote.

Place gun back in rack. Drive on.

I used the rotation of the earth to our advantage. It's the only way the bullet made it to the target.

I figured while you walked to check the targets you just looked around the 100 yard line for the bullets, then carried them to the target and threw them at the steel........

You could hook him up with an M231. . .https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M231_Firing_Port_Weapon

Or, for when the coyotes get REALLY close, a Krummlauf attachment: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krummlauf

But still, "EXIT GUN"! It's gonna be the next gun nut lingo thing! Right up there with "Cera-Kote" and "Picatinny"!

That's brilliant! You can double the range of the .270, but only if you fire it from East to West.

You have coined a new name for a gun that has been around a very long time. At least the 1820's with the free trapper/ mountain man. The Hawken rifle, shortened barrel for easier maneuvering aboard the 19th century pickup.

I have seen pictures of Enfield rifles with barrels cut to ~12" and suppressed. Done by poachers in England or one of her former colonies.

The Model 94 or 336 were almost always seen in farmers pickup window for critter control. At least when I was a kid.

Now the AR carbine rides in a lot of pickups for the same reason, just not usually in the back window.

I put my AR pistol together specifically for my travel trailer.

Orchidman: City destroying earthquakes in NZ, Tsunami's in Japan, Snow where I live (for the first time in 72yrs), Zee with a savage in his gun cabinet.............................

    THE END IS NIGH

At least it wasnt a 270..................was it???
And so you have come full circle.

When I opened this thread and saw the first sentence regarding the distance, I pictured a faceless man shooting, then lugging a reloading outfit to the 100m mark, finding the projectile, reloading it and shooting again................repeated 5 times.

I like the way you calculated the 'hold'.

Just wondering out loud whether the stars will align someday and you will end up with a Savage in 270...........

I've thought hard about this. I've got only one .270. I have multiple rifles in other calibers so if I'm gonna be the .270 poster boy I need more .270s and the Savage may get the nod. A nice fat barreled one that will shoot bug hole groups at 500 yards would be nice. However, I want one with a 1:8 twist so I can shoot the new VLD heavy long bullets.
