    Everyone with high mileage vehicles.....

Wife's Audi maintenance schedule is calling for brake fluid replacement. Which made me think..... I have never heard of anyone actually replacing their brake fluid.

    Do you?

My understanding of it is that brake fluid is hygroscopic (that is, takes on water readily). In theory, that could mean water contamination over time, but if I'm being honest, I've never done a full brake line purge, even when my truck was creeping up on 150,000 miles, which was just before I traded it in.

I replaced mine in the MBZ too many years ago - I probably need to do it again...

Mine essentially gets replaced when they get bled after brake work.

Yea, there's that. But that's over 10 years and 100K miles - is that often enough?

If it looks like water or piss, its good. Don't waste your money. I've never seen brake lines rust from the inside.

I think it's more to protect the ABS sensors than the lines

Before they (manufacturers) tightened up on parts tolerances, brake cylinders used to leak enough that brake fluid got replaced by necessity over time.

I have once. I replaced the master cylinder on my old Dodge and bled the brakes enough to get clean fluid to them all.

It's an AUDI, it has ABS. Your Wife is driving it.

You really have to ask ?

Brake fluid is 20,- tops and it takes 20 minutes to do.

Over here in Europe female drivers depend on their car-brakes a Lot ! (special driving skills)

AUDI has brake fluid changes in their maintenance schedule every 2 years here.

In short Her car needs proper working ABS-brakes, the fluid is cheap A Bosch controller not so.

Actually, she's pretty good on the brakes. Put 88,000 on her 2005 Charger and never had the brakes replaced.

I bet she could have went 25,000 more

At least it's not a Rolls-Royce, with brake fluid that costs $40.00 a quart, and is only available at dealer parts departments. I learned that while attempting a restoration of a road-weary Silver Shadow owned by country songwriter Hank Cochran!

Driving around in this tourist traffic down here, I'm sure that she'll be using the brakes a bit more.

I hate ABS. When I cram my foot down, I want my brakes to lock up. And please don't feed me a story of how ABS is safer because I once nearly went into a store wall because the damn brakes wouldn't lock. I threw it in park at the last minute and saved my car, the building AND it didn't hurt the trans.

That's one hell of a parking pawl you have in that vehicle.

Was a dodge challenger going at very slow speed in a slick snow. The damn abs wouldn't stop it even at 5mph.

Locking brakes on slick snow or ice means more sliding, not stopping. Your brakes did what they were designed to do. As pointed out by KMT2, ABS doesn't fix mistakes by the driver and it can't tell you to slow down to "X" speed in order to navigate the parking lot you're turning into.

Re: Everyone with high mileage vehicles.....

My Dad let me borrow his Camaro many years ago. The only car he ever rebuilt the motor for. I was on my way home from work when the interchange ramp was a sheet of ice. The lady in front of my spun out. I was a youngster in my twenties with reflexes like a cat. No abs ever made could have pumped them brakes faster and gentler than I did.

Not so sure if I could repeat that today.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

She must be stopping Fred Flintstone style.

Here in SoCal, the land of stop and go traffic and a million stop lights, many can't get more than 25,000 miles out of a set of brake pads.
