    Roe buck trophy finished today

Yesterday I prepared buck's head and today I fabricated a wooden back plate for it from the timber I had. At the same time skull was whitening on peroxide. I think it turned out pretty ok. What do you think?

Wow - great work. That's a nice backer you made.

Now, how soon will it be before you add the other half of the pair, "Sears" to the trophy room?

Nicely done Turdus, congratulations. The first European mounts, (what they are called on our side of the pond), that I ever saw was in South Dakota. I really like the look. Does anyone in your club hunt with a muzzleloader? Keep yer powder dry..........robin

Come on Jerry, different species are different sized trophies. A nilgai is the size of an elk and has a rack that size. Not everything is based on a whitetail deer.

But, aren't Sears and Roebuck usually found together? Makes sense they would go together on a trophy wall!

    Thanks!

No, we can't use muzzleloaders here as we have energy limits on cartridges. Like whitetail and roe deer: It needs a caliber in class 3 which means E 100 > 2000 J (2000 joules =
1 475foot pounds), bullet at least 90gr or
    E 100 > 1700 J (1700 joules =
1 253 foot pounds), bullet weight at least 124gr
Moose, bear and hog hunting is allowed with calibers in class 4: E 100 (meters) > 2700 J (2700 joules =
1 991 foot pounds), bullet weight at least 140gr or
    E 100 (meters) > 2000 J (2000 joules =
1 475 foot pounds), bullet weight at least 155gr
Handloading is allowed but you are responsible to load hot enough to be above legal limits.
Bow hunting is allowed with roe deer. It will be allowed with whitetails next autumn. Moose hunt remains illegal with a bow.

The mount looks great. My neighbor does my euro-mounts and does a great job but his process takes a few months from start to finish. How did you get that done so quickly?

Dan should be excited about another form of data to track with his reloading.

I skinned and cut the head first, boiled it for a couple of hours. Used compressed air to dry it and left it to dry more overnigh. Next day I draw a template and used saw to cut the backplate. Same time I took 12% peroxide and brushed the skull with it. Before this I had washed it with soapy water to get rid of the grease.
Sawed the wood, trimmed and sanded it. Used some stain to it. Fabricated hanging point and screwed the skull to it.
Two days. Had to do it quickly as the smell of the head doesn't get better with time in warm weather :)

OK- - - - -the concentration of the Peroxide is the secret. Medicinal peroxide is 2% concentration by volume. Hair bleaching peroxide is 4% (the rest is water). The peroxide Dad used to use in his methanol race car fuel instead of Nitromethane was 20%. It was strong enough to eat the bottom out of an aluminum carburetor bowl if the carb wasn't run dry between races!

When he gets done, there is no smell. He puts them in with dermestidae beetles for a few weeks to a month, then he soaks them in dish soap and water for at least a week and changes the liquid a couple of times and this soaks all of the oils out of the bone, then he washes them with peroxide and dries them for a few more days.
