    Vortex PST MOA range report

    http://www.opticsplanet.com/vortex-v...ticle=tmcq-moa
I got the MOA one and first impressions are great. Lots of light and more clear than the leupold. 1/2 moa clicks seem pretty positive and consistent. MOA reticle is a little wierd, but I think I can get used to it. Its my first ever illuminated scope and with a real low setting I can put the MOA dot in the X ring at 200, and with the clarity, I can see the rings.

I got back from the MCL match and took the rear sight assembly off the AR and mounted this scope. I donated the Leupold and mount to the son who bought a flat top upper while at Camp Perry. I have had this for a while, but I needed the open sights on there for this match. (FYI I did OK, 187-12V /200, slow fire kneeling killed me and I dropped 3 sitting that I had no business to. Classed as Master, probably in the top 10)

Anyway, I mounted it Sunday and played catch up house stuff the rest of the day. Got new glasses and decided to take out the Krag, (I can see the sights again ;) WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE ) because I have a Garand, Springfield Vintage match in 2 Saturdays, and brought this out to get it close because I have a EIC match that Sun.

Boresighted it across sandbags at 200, fired to see if I would get lucky, nope. Put a target up at 100ish and fired 5 to get it there. Ned will be happy.

125 yds, Hoppes front rest, both elbows on the bench, left hand against rt shoulder, butt held in web of left hand. PMC Xtac ammo. After #5, I put another click of elevation in and moved back to 200. I put 3 downrange and need a bit more elevation. shot 2 10's and a X. I am taking next Tues afternoon off to go to Reade Range and get it on at 2-3, and 6 with handloads.

I've been going back and forth between the Vortex and the Leupold. Thanks for the report!

Side note, I think we are the only two Service Rifle guys here.

I have that same scope on my AR. My first optic, so I have nothing to compare it to...but I like it.

Like the looks of that scope, but can't seem to want to spend that much on a low power scope.

I found the magnification ring to be a bit stiff. The throw lever really helped.

That's one of those things that you want to turn EASY.....but only when you want it to.

I think some people are looking for you to make sure you're ok. They mentioned they hadn't heard from you since the storm.

    .
The leupold is a good scope. I will have to run this across the course before I say its "better". I dont think you would be unhappy with it for service rifle at this time. I got the Vortex 2 inch fwd mount and it gave me enough room to get eye relief. The original Leupold mount did not, and I replaced that with a Stoner. I wont miss the Leupold being in mils vs the Vortex in MOA. It was just something else to think about correcting for wind. Since I suck at reading wind, I need less converting going on :). I swagged this up for a quick reference.

    1 MOA = 1.047 inches @ 100y
    1 Milliradian (mil) = 3.6" @ 100 and 3.4 MOA
    .1 Mil or 1 click on Leupold scope is .36" @ 100y
One click (.1 Mil) = .34 (1/3 for all practical purposes) MOA

MOA and mils are angular measurements so they dont change over distance.

    1 click (.1 mil) = .72" @200 and still .34 MOA
    1 click (.1 mil) = 1.08" @300 and still .34 MOA
    1 click (.1 mil) = 2.16" @600 and still .34 MOA

    Sheesh. Californians.

An ideal power adjustment could be cranked up or down with almost zero effort. Yet never move unless you wanted it to. But, you can't have cake and consume it as well.

Size isnt everything. There was a sale and I had a discount, so I "saved" money. I was looking to add another Leupold when I saw this.

If you have not purchased from optics planet, try creating an account, adding something to your cart, and not purchase it. Then you might just get an email for an additional discount. That happened to me the first time I bought.

    Exactly.

And 1-4 scopes make me real happy. For my area, and 90% of every other hunters areas, (they just don't know it) for hunting deerish sized game a 1-4 is the perfect scope.
Target work for me, not so much. Guess it depends on the style of targets.

Depending on the rifle and when I put a scope on it, my hunting rifles are either 3-9x40 or 2-7x33. I used to have a 1.75-5x??. Even the 2-7x33 is overkill for most of what I have done. Im going to be building a .458 that I plan on putting a 1-4 on if I can find what im looking for, otherwise it will be another 2-7x33.

Depends on the rules of the game not what you want. Service rifle is a max 4x. 2 years ago it was open sights only. So thats what you can use. 4x for any deer under 300 is plenty. The Marine Corps League is talking about allowing scopes to get the old guys back since the CMP got 20% in old shooters back with the same change.
