Picked up my secondary rifle today

I got my permission to buy a second rifle from cops on monday. Today I managed to pick it up from the store 80 miles away from our home. Savage Axis in 30-06. Put my old Leupold M8 to it and it looks like a real rifle, actually. Don't know yet if it will ever see anything but cardboard moose. Perhaps, time will tell. It's a lot lighter than my Rem 798. 2lbs lighter. That speaks for the possibility to get picked up for some moose hunting some day. Have to test shoot it first at some point.

Nice! The Rem. 799 is on a Mauser action. The Savage is a push feed action and a good bit lighter than a Mauser action. But the Savage will definitely shoot!

Thread derail, can you still purchase a surplus Finnish Moisin Nagant in Finland?

Even your spectacular photography skills can't make that gun look good.
I've got two of them, and haven't had any issues with them. Decent gun for the money.

Then let me be the first to apply some enabling pressure to get a Finnish version of the rifle and add to your collection of meat gathering tools.
BTW, I got my dad one when they were $89.95 US NIB, should have bought one for each of the kids.

I love your beach, how is the fishing?

You know, even when I know how much our nation owes to "pystykorva" (Finnish Mosin-Nagant rifle) for it's services in wars against Soviet Union, I really don't like it at all. Don't know why but it just doesn't touch me in any way.

Fishing? Hmmm... yeah. It's about 45 yards to water line from our house and I fish very rarely. In the spring time when ice melts from the sea I keep nets for a couple of weeks. You can get salmon (pretty rare) white fish, pike perch, pike, Baltic herring and perch. Those are the most usual fishes in these waters.

Congrats on the new aquisition. Love the scenery around your home.

Just curious as to why you bought a second 30.06............not that there is anything wrong with having multiple rifles in the same calibre.

My Rem 798 has one "flaw". It throws 124gr FMJs ten inches higher than 170-180gr hunting bullets. I use light FMJs to running moose target shooting and I hated to adjust POI between hunting and practice shooting. So when there was a couple of these rifle on 50% sale I decided to buy one. This Axis probably won't see living animals but will be used to punch holes into the cardboard moose running on tracks. Depends how it shoots different weight bullets. If it throws lighter and heavier bullets to roughly same point it might see some action in to woods and fields too. If not I'll use it on range only.

    Awesome!

Is it a legal requirement for hunting or is it more like voluntary competition?

I might have to look at setting something like that up at the range. It looks like fun............Serious shooting but fun at the same time.

We have to shoot big game shooting test every 3rd year in order to hunt moose, deer or bear. It used to have shooting to moving target too but nowadays just for the standing moose target. But we still train to shoot voluntarely to moving moose target too. Four shots to standing and six shots to moving moose target. That’s one competition round.
    Moving Moose-target:
Gap of 23m/25 yards, moose runs it in 4.4 seconds. Distance 75m/82 yards or 100 meters. 10 ring size is 11cm/4.4 inches, biggest ring one is 65cm/25 inches.

One dollar US is about 84% .84 of one Euro..............some of those prices are good, but others over 2 times or more. Some nice rifles in that lineup.

I have been sorely tempted to get one of those Axis rifles just for a backup gun.

    Beautiful pictures, as well.

I'm thinking of adding a "running stag" target to the 200 yard range we use at the SE shoot, but I'm concerned that some donkeyhole will start shooting at the suspension cable!
