    Fifth of the season

Today started driven hunts with daschhunds. There were only six men from our entourage. Two with dogs and four with just rifles. Weather was cloudy but no wind. We decided the places where the riflemen would go to wait for the possible deer and hunt was on. I was in the side of the field and and enjoying my free time from the very bad week. Later on that...

It took about fifteen minutes until I heard dogs barking. Five minutes later I saw doe and a fawn coming into the field from the forest from about 400 yards across the field. First they were running towards me and I took my safety off and raised my 798. Soon after that they took turn to the right towards my dad who was about 250 yards from me. I started to whistle at them and they stopped to about 170 yards from me. Long(ish) shot from the off hand and I hesitated a little. Decided to try at the fawn. Put my Zeiss' red dot to the shoulder, took a deep breath and started to pull the trigger. At that moment I saw a puff from the fawns shoulder: My dad was faster :) Doe took a couple rounds around the fawn and bolted in an angle towards me. Suddenly it took a turn again and ran towards the forest. I had only a couple of seconds to take a shot until it would draw my dad's "stand" into line of fire behind the doe. I rushed my red dot in front of the doe and pulled the trigger. Doe collapsed on the spot and I knew instantly I had hit her spine. Ran to the deer and gave her a coup de grace. My fifth deer this season was reality. And 10th deer all together. Just in one year. Distance to running deer when measured was 150 yards when I shot her from the off hand. Not bad I think.

This has been a very bad and sad week in my family. My father in law got a stroke to his brains last tuesday and eventually this will chance everything in our life. Nothing will be the same. That's OK in the long run but it's been difficult to all of us. Especially to my wife, naturally. This hunt gave me a few hours of rest from the dark clouds in the horizon. I'm glad I got my 10th deer and some venison but not as happy as I could be.

    Once again Congratulations.
I still have a hard time thinking of Daschunds as hunting dogs

Great job Turdus, and your family is in our prayers.

    Daddy, what's an enabler?
Son that's somebody with nothing to do with his time but keep me in trouble with mom.

Very sorry to hear the news about your father-in-law. Strokes are very serious, of course, and definitely life changing. Regardless, I am glad to see that you have scored yet again! Great work.

Couple of very typical situations in driven hunts with dachshunds here in Finland :)
