    Shoot or not?

Turkey season is open and either sex is legal. Do you take a hen with poults?

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.

    I likely wouldn't today.

Some years back I might have. If was hungry, she'd be in the pot before you finished typing.
My thoughts are generally clear. My typing, not so much.

Poults that size are able to survive very easily without mama around- - - - -fire away if you choose.

What about bucks eating my apples?

I have to wait ten days until the season opens. Not a bad day for wildlife viewing from the house. 😁

I wouldn't shoot the hen, but like Teach said, they are old enough to survive at this point, so as long as you can make a clean kill...... fire away.

I let them walk this time. I could've walked out the front door and boom. Not exactly "hunting".

    Re: Shoot or not?

I'd let the hen walk. Spring season here is toms only. Technically if it had a beard it's legal. So the gender confused birds may die. Fall season is anything goes. I've never hunted with gun in the fall, only with a bow because archery season includes deer and turkeys. All that said, if I was bow hunting and a turkey walked up, it's going to die. No matter what it is. After 10-ish years of bow hunting and only once getting CLOSE to be able to loose an arrow at a bird, the birds are safe....

Is it legal game? Are you legal taking the shot from where you would be?

Bang flop. Hunting does not have to equal struggle. My goal is to jump out of the shower, look outside, see a buck, and shoot it from the deck, go get dressed and haul it in.
I figure it averages out. For as much time as I have put in cold and wet, it doesnt bother me a bit to take a easy one.
It's boring, and your lack of creativity knows no bounds.

I would be a perfectly legal harvest. But it just seemed...wrong. With the turkeys anyway.

I feel ya. I love squirrel hunting and the squirrels are so thick on our place that when I throw a handful of cracked corn on the ground for the chickens, there is about half a dozen squirrels on the ground about ten feet from me chowing down on it. I have never shot a squirrel on our place as it's too easy and as long as they stay out of the house, they can live.

The order of operations gave me one helluva retina burn from afar...but, yeah - those poults are damned near full grown. They are clearly able to feed and flee as required. Now, if they were still the little fuzzy things, yeah, I would have an issue shooting the mom. I am like CaliFFL, though, in that I really do enjoy a challenge, especially when I know I've got a great chance to get it done anyway.

An up-side to shooting the poults is that they are stupid tender.... haven't been around long enough to get tough
