What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

For me, I've got the itch to hunt with my XP some.
I haven't decided if it, or my 799 Grendel will start the season, though PROBABLY the rifle will
    Me
    1) Custom Rem799 in 6.5 Grendel loaded with 123gr Hornady SSTs
    2) XP-100 7mmIHMSA with 110gr Barnes TTSX-FB
    3) AR- 50 Beowulf 335gr Rainier HP
    4) AR 223 55gr Speer Gold Dot

    Wife
Ruger 77 Compact 308 with either 125 NBT or 125 SCHP from midsouth

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

    1. 430 SJS, but I best get busy. 265 FTX bullets.
2..308 Mauser Scout rifle. Don't recal which bullet.
    3. Cva ML pistol.
    4. 7-08 Savage as backup.

2-4 can change. But #1 is the goal. Unless it changes.

The new 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger must be christened first!
Then "Dr. Kevorkian" my 27 year old Rem 700 Sendero in .25-06...The number of suicides it's assisted is magical!
Then "Black Death"...a 700 Sendero in .300 Win Mag she's one of the deadliest ever!
Then "Ma Bell"....A custom .257 STW that'll reach out and touch someone!
Then an un-named custom 7mm STW that is just super accurate but the brake makes me almost not like shooting it, I have lost 80% in my left ear because I shot her without getting my plugs in first on a sorry azz wild hog...
Then I got a dandy .257WBY in a Vanguard that shoots like a ball of fire and kills 'em like lightening!

Rubber band with a paper clip.

As much as I'll get to hunt this year, that will work as good as any.

No particular order. Just depends on the day and the hunt.

-TC Encore Pistol = .358 Winchester

    -Remington 700 = .338 Win Mag
    -Ruger SBH 10.5" Barrel = .44 Mag
    -Dominator Pistol = .35 Remington
    -Encore 16" Rifle = .280 Remington
    -Contended Pistol = .44 Mag
    -Benchrest Rifle = .260 Remington
    -Marlin Guide Gun = .45-70
-Ruger SBH Bisley = .480 Ruger

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

    - AR-15 in 6x45
    - TVM flintlock in .50 cal
    - Winchester 1892 in .45 Colt
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

    1- Henry .45-70 Lever
    2- CVA Scout .243 Pistol
    3- Ruger SRH .454 Casull
    4- CZ-527 Carbine in 7.62x39
5- Then it will be probably the DPMS LR-308 and various Mil-surps as I just go into the woods for family free naps and reading books.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

    1966 year model 70 Win. 270 Win.

    98 Mauser action .280 Remington

.257 Roberts AI in a Yugo 24/47 Mauser action

8mm Mauser in a 24/47 Yugo action, still has the Mil Surp stepped barrel

That's the order of use. The .270 will get the nod for first weekend duty. Why? I have confidence in her.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

Well, I don't get to hunt this year, but if deer were on the menu, I'd likely grab my Rem 700 VLS chambered in 6mm Rem, stuffed with 95 grain NBT's at 3250 fps.

I've killed more than a few deer with my Browning A-Bolt in .270 Win, but I would like to see how the 6mm does. I think it would do pretty well. I can hit with my .270 pretty well, but with the 6mm, it seems that I can place my shots.

I used a little heavier bullet in my 6mm, 100 grain SGKs. But inside a couple hundred yards it killed as reliably as my .270. I killed deer out to 400 yards with it, but only once, so I won't speculate about longer ranges. Most deer I killed with it were within 200 yards and most of that was inside 100. But it was about the same with my .270.

If that wouldn't work on Colorado deer, I don't know what would. I hunted deer one year with my .243, also loaded with 95 grain NBTs, but never fired a round.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

Took my CRF M70 25-06 antelope hunting (missed, I probably shouldn't have tried the shot)

Took my PF M70 25-06 deer hunting the last 2 days. All the deer were on private.

Picked up a leftover elk tag....not sure what I'll take. Might just bring the PF 25-06, its shooting really well with the 120s. Its Last minute, don't know if I can get any of the other guns up and running in time. I'd have to buy mounts and a scope for the 300 Wby trio (found another one online Thursday, its en route). I'll probably try some factory ammo in the 30-06 featherweight. If my 270 shows up this week, I've got 50 rounds of 150gr to use up before it gets sent off for a rebore.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

Trapdoor with a 405gr lead over 70 of BP. I got a new front sight, but have had zero luck removing the pin. I added a few drops of JB weld to the old sight to at least get it into the field. We had weeks of sun and dry, now whenever I have time it seems to be raining. I need to put a roof over the bench and the 200 yd area.

If I score with that, then the 300 Savage or the 6mm Lee will come out or the Barngun.

If all of those fail, the 54 Barn gun is coming out for sure.

If I get to hunt this year, it will be with my Remington 700 7mm08 and some factory load, probably Hornady 139r SSTs.

So....if I hunt where me and the kid hunted today, the 430 is OUT. Because I can shoot 500 yards there. I won't, but I can. 300-ish will be my imposed limit.

Never, not ever, don't never forget your hearing protection when shooting a hi powered rifle, well when shooting anything, but especially a rifle. Not only do you get an extra helping of boom from the high pressure cartridge, but you've got that supersonic crack that is icing on the cake. I'm deaf without my hearing aides from just such B.S. Ask some of the guys who've met me at the SE shoot!

Hurricane Irma has put a dent in my plans to develop the Keltec sub 2000 .40 S&W for my annual hog hunt in two weeks. Currently scheduled for a two day stand hunt, about 30 yards from shooting lanes.

    So as of now....

    Custom AR-15 .300 BO 125 gr SST
    Savage 116 .243 100 gr
Marlin 45-70 with Trail Boss 405 gr cast lead loads
    Potentially Keltec Sub 2000 .40 S&W ( stalking )

This year I will keep a G22 on my hip to match the Sub2K

You must use the 45-70 with the trail boss loads. SCIENCE!

When we hunt the "rifle" zone, I think I am taking the .338 Win Mag. The boy all but owns my .338 Federal now so he will be using that. Down state in the "shotgun" zone I will be using the .430 SJS and the boy either the 77/44 or the #1 in .460 S&W.

What scope do you have on your .270? I've got a Redfield Revolution on mine now and one on my .300 WBY also. Both are 4-12 x 40s.

Got the bipod mounted. It's cheesy AF.
But third minute groups are more than acceptable, I suppose. The proof in the pudding is in the shooting.
Anyway, it's ready and the 430 SJS is ready to send 265 grains of love on its way if I hunt the woods instead of the fields.

Re: What's your "batting order" for this fall's deer hunting?

The .338 Win mag should be ready to go... just check zero and do drops. 430 SJS should be dead nuts with the hotter, longer load than Chris has. 338 Fed should be dead nuts. .260 should be dead on for mama. 250 Savage-- I need to check that one for my daughter. I want to load some 10mm. I also need to figure out a loaner gun or 2--ideas? 7mm mag... 300 mag... 7.62x39... 44 mag... 35 Rem... 30/06... 460 S&W.... 45/70... . Then, what should I use as a distance backup? 6.5 Creedmoore or .338 RUM? 7mmSTW?

The plan is I have a bigass pop up blind and hunting a powerline out to my comfortable distance. In that blind, I have room to set up a heater and the coolest rifle rest I have ever used. If I do woods hunting or in the "shotgun" zone, it will be the .430 SJS. But I have had that .338 Win mag since I was 13 and it needs to get bloody-- I am using 210gr Deepcurls. So is the .338 FED.
