    Puppy scores

    hunter1.jpghunter2.jpg

We went to Buzzard Swamp and got skunked in the early morning. Close to literally. Puppy found poo. Probably bow hunter poo. Thankfully, it was in a swamp and she hit every puddle and depression for the rest of the time that took it from gag to nasty.

We hit the larger area about 9. Lots of people there so we walked in the low end. 2 miles ish and you have to pass the propagation areas. http://www.alleghenysite.com/wp-cont...wamp-Trail.pdf We hunted the area below pond 6 and the trail. We started along the pond and only put up one bird and he headed to the high grass to the south. After we hunted along the pond we moved up to the grass. It was high, like 6-7' and tough going. Dont know how a pointer would have worked there, but apparently the pointer guys stayed out of it, because thats where the birds were.

The guy I was hunting with's dog put up a hen for him that he shot, then put one up for me and I missed. A bit farther and he got a rooster. His dog flushed a rooster and he held it back while Elly and I tried to get on it, but no joy. As we were bumping around a rooster popped up away from us and headed for the woods S of the trail. I saw where he landed and got Elly with me and I got her to the area. She was doping around until the scent hit, then it was game on. She was on him like stink on my dog. The hunt involved me running her down running him down. Good thing I have been on the treadmill #1. She got him (pic 1) and was pretty proud of herself.
Then we had the pups together and were working along the trail when a rooster bolts up the trail. Dogs didnt see it and I started running (treadmill good #2) as it turned a corner. The dogs figured it out about the time I got near them. I rounded the bend, stopped and and as his wings spread, I sent 20ga worth of shot at him. He went down and had 150 lbs of labs on him is a sec.

I am up 3 Alieve and two beers, Elly is sprawled on the floor. I took us into the downstairs shower right after off loading the truck and breasting the birds.

Congrats on the hard work and the great working dog! Pheasant hunting in PA is no easy business, and this is a great start.

Wild birds are the bomb, but there are few better training grounds for a pup than taking them to a shooting preserve and getting them on some birds....

I am going to take her in Dec, schedule does not allow me to right now. These birds are stocked, there are few wild pheasant in PA. The original strain got blended and doesnt survive well. They are trying to propagate more, but the game commission stocks a lot.

I love hunting with dogs. More fun to watch them work than to actually hunt.

Even a bad day afield with dogs is better than a good day at work. Labs rule! I envy you.
