    Happy Birthday, Marines! Put down the crayons and have some cake!

    From the Halls of Montezuma
    To the Shores of Tripoli;
    We will fight our country's battles
    In the air, on land and sea;
    First to fight for right and freedom
    And to keep our honor clean;
    We are proud to claim the title
    of United States Marine.

    Our flag's unfurled to every breeze
    From dawn to setting sun;
    We have fought in ev'ry clime and place
    Where we could take a gun;
    In the snow of far-off Northern lands

    And in sunny tropic scenes;
    You will find us always on the job--
    The United States Marines.

    Just went to Walmart and saw an old Marine VET wearing a ball-cap, told him Happy Birthday USMC and shook his hand.

    Ha, I remember sitting in an M113 APC many a time in the German forest chowing down after they broke out the C-rations and then hearing over the radio from HQ, Do Not Eat the cans labeled XXXXX......from Lot# ....

    I never went to war, because of failing my physical. But having had a slew of family members who did, I am proud of anybody who has fought for this country. But no finer warrior has ever gone forth in an American uniform than a Marine. WWII and Vietnam is what most people think about when you talk about U.S. Marines in combat. But there were other conflicts before where the Marines did us proud. I've read a pile of non fiction about WWII and some of it makes my hair stand up on end just thinking about what it must have been like to be there. I read one book, Bloody Tarawa and when I finished I couldn't sleep well for a week. One third of the invasion force was killed out in the water in front of the beach. We took that little atol in less than three days I think. But we lost a lot of men. They didn't notice until too late that there was a Japanese on an old beached sunken freighter to the side of the landing beach that was mowing Marines down with a machine gun almost as fast as they left their he landing crafts. Due to the tide they had to wade about 6oo yards I think to get to cover on the beach and we lost 900 men out of 3,000. But they didn't cow or try to swim away, they were Marines and knew their duty and nothing was going to cause the landing to fail as long as there was a Marine standing. And that's just one example of many. No soldier on earth is as polite and well mannered as a U.S. Marine, but none as fierce a fighter either. Happy Birthday to all Marines.
