Tagged a nice 12 pt this evening

Neighbor said he'd been seeing a big buck in the wheat field across the street from me. Decided to hunt my son's stand which is closest to the road and wheat field. About 5:30 three does came in from the direction of the rd and wheat field. They kept looking over their shoulder and this lad came in. Easy shot at 75 yards and he ran 50 yards. I'm tagged out for the season.

    Nice.
We as a country have a blown engine, a transmission that slips in every forward gear, and a rear diff with a loud whine. And our politicians keep trying to spray armorall on the tires and proudly step back as if they are helping fix the car.

Through and through shot! It's been a long time since I've recovered a bullet on a deer. My .243 just launches little 85 gr missiles!

    Nice!
I've heard tell of similar sized bucks being killed in Texas, and they had to use magnum rounds. Amazing how proper shot placement trumps caliber....

That's one more than I've gotten so far. We've got a few like him on our lease but they're masters of deception. That's how they got so big, so you did real good, for an Aggie,

Nicely done Jeff, congratulations! The .243 kills much better than it should, it is my favorite for whitetails. I have two Model 700 Remingtons, one heavy barrel and one sporting barrel that has harvested 36 deer and two hogs. Keep yer powder dry.........robin

Jeff, how big, body wise, are the deer in your area? Years ago, I hunted a lot between Ozona and Del Rio. All we ever saw and killed were whitetail. I buck that field dressed 100 lbs. was big for that area.

    Jerry,

I put him on the scale prior to skinning out, he field dressed at 142 lbs. I'm north central Texas about 55 miles below the Red River. I deer hunted in south Texas down in Uvalade 20 some odd years ago. Wasn't successful what I remember was the body size was smaller, racks wider and never saw a basket rack like we have in our area.

That's what I consider a big deer. I killed a mule deer in the Flat Tops of Colorado one year that was so big I could hardly drag him. He didn't have a particularly big rack, but had a long body and dwarfed the does he was with. I estimated his field dressed weight at 175, but who knows how much he really weighed.

Regardless, you got a big one.

I usually find depending on how far and they type of terrain I have to drag one, it usually adds a 100 extra pounds to the dressed weight!

Amen to that! Hunting writers like to write about ground shrinkage, but there's also such a thing as ground expansion.

That's nothing, I know a guy that as soon as he pulls the trigger, I mean even before the bullet hits the deer, it gains 50 pounds and 6 points almost without fail. Oh wait, I have seen it fail to happen but that was only when he was telling the story with someone that was with him when he killed it was present. It's the darndist thing, I tell ya!

    It's a simple formula.
For every foot you have to drag it , the weight increases 1 pound above the field dressed weight. So I figure the deer I shot this year weighed around 750 pounds before I got it to the truck.
