    Dawson Precision Tool-less Guide Rod

Anyone use one in their bull-barrelled 1911? Thinking about getting a couple for my TRP Operator and my custom CCO...

I have not used one, but Dawson Precision has a pretty good reputation. It's very tempting, it certainly beats the "stick a paperclip in the tiny hole" system on my STI right now.

Agreed, although it seems they only make it for 5" uppers. I still might get one for my TRP, especially since it's not a social pistol...

Seems like if you're going to go to the trouble of switching to that, why not just go to a GI setup? I don't get rid of the FLGR on my STI because I like how the pistol shoots and handles, and don't want to change it beyond an eventual trip to Robar for a refinish.

Re: Dawson Precision Tool-less Guide Rod

Well, I like the bull barrel on the TRP Op for the extra weight; I mainly use it for bowling pin matches, the heavier barrel and heavier frame (from the rail) gives me better sight-recovery times. Hell, I've even cornsidered using a Storm Lake extended ported bull barrel, but I'm not that far gone yet.

Re my CCO, since it uses the 4" Kimber Pro Carry upper, I think I'm limited by the lack of that little .25" of barrel to use a GI setup. But it's a laser any way you slice it, so *that* one I'm inclined to leave be...

A 1911 with properly fitted barrel/bushing/link needs no guide rod.

Mike, the TRP Operator uses a bull barrel and a reverse plug with a full-length rod. I love the way it shoots and the extra weight for pins, so I don't want to lose that.

Trust me, on my other fullsize 1911s, there ain't no guide rods, just the itty bitty short one with the GI plug as John MB intended!

I'd be tempted to get it. Looks like a good piece of kit. Dawson's got a good reputation.

Do we need to reprogram you? I think your wifes reprogramming that she did in your behavior has spilled out over to common sense.
Come to the shoot. We can make you right again.

Don't worry sweet cheeks, I'm not advocating changing from GI to FLGR. However, in LM's situation, he's got no choice. Unless he gets a new barrel, adds a bushing, and does some other work, possibly. WERE I HIM WITH HIS PISTOL IN QUESTION, I'd look at the Dawson setup. But for my 1911s, if it comes with a FLGR, it's getting changed to GI as soon as possible.

Thank you, Earl. Sometimes I think Chris' spandex is so tight it interferes with his brain function, 'specially since his seems to be where he sits.

If you buy one, you will have to call it "tool OWNED".
