You need to supply a little more info I would say. What are you hunting with? How many of you are there? Do you have a guide? Do you have horses? Which part of October, Early, mid, or end? Have you been there before?

Re: Co Unit 521 2nd rifle

    First, welcome.

Second, another forum member, Mosseybuck, and I will be hunting 521 during this season. I've hunted it quite a bit in the past, but it's been at least 10 years since I've been there. We'll be hunting between West Muddy Creek and East Muddy Creek.

I have a forest sevice map of the Gunnison Basin, which encompasses 521, and cannot for the life of me figure out where just 'Muddy Creek' is. I know that West Muddy and East Muddy converge at the north end of Paonia Reservoir.

If you wish, shoot me a PM/IM and maybe we can figure out exactly what part of 521 your tags are good for. 521 is a very large area, and segmented in regard to cow tags. I believe that for the second rifle season, the entire area is open for OTC bull tags, though.

    Good luck.

Another forum member and I looked at this just a few days ago. There are some cow tags available south of West Muddy and west of Hwy 133, as well as north of Muddy Creek and east of hwy 133. From your description, I think you have tags for the first.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with that area, as I don't know it at all. I'll be north of West Muddy and west of hwy 133.

There was a member here who also hunted 521, and he may know that area. He recently moved to Florida, and I don't know if he's still active. I'll see if I can reach him and ask him to respond.

    Good luck.

something else just occurred to me, which is to call the CDOW's Grand Junction office and ask to talk to someone familiar with the area. Their number is 970-255-6100. I've done that on several occassions, and found the wildlife folks very helpful. Just keep in mind that they talk to a lot of people, and are probably giving the same or similar advice to everyone they talk to. Still, it's another resource.

    ya Jerry i'm still here
To the newbe, welcome. About 521 SW Muddy creek, i hunted it for about 8 yrs. before i moved to Fla. May i suggest you get the following quadrangle's 1) somerset 2) Bull mt. 3) Electric Mt. You'll come in on forest service (fs) rd. #265 to the west muddy ranger station take the left rd. fs 704 down past Condemn It Park stay to the left to almost the end of the rd. find a place to camp. On the map you'll see 2 "drill holes" you can go in at the last one and hunt. I always hunted Springhouse Park, a 1/2 mile back from the 1st hole is a jeep trail on the South side, it will take you up around Pilot Knob to Buck Mesa, stay to the left and look at the somerset map you'll find Springhouse park. follow the creek till ya get near the drop off and hunt . Also Buck Mesa and 1000 acre flat. The jeep trail has some really bad places, depending on the weather really muddy, were talking major gumbo mud, bring chains for all 4 wheels, a winch if ya got one.

Wishing you a damn good hunt and get one for me JAY

Ryan, I hunted W Muddy for about 8 years, always in the last season, if y dont already have them ya need Somerset, Bull Mt., & Electric Mt. 7.5 Min. Quadrangles. Its funny ya mentioned Springhouse Park, I always considered that my personal hunting area, in all the years i hunted there I only saw 2 others up there, and they stuck to the road. If the weather is dry ya can get most any 4WD up to the top, if its wet, it can get real bad, I always carried chains, and at times had to use them, I also had a 8000Lb. winch on my Jeep with extra cable and snatch blocks.

Got yer phone Nr and will call ya with the rest of the info.

I hunted that area quite a bit in the 90s. We took some elk as well as a few deer. My dad killed a 150 inch mule deer in that area, as well as his one and only elk (a raghorn). I also killed a raghorn bull and missed one of the biggest bucks I ever shot at.

But, Mosseybuck (Paul Martin) and I hunted that same are a few years ago, and did not see anything at all. The weather was hot and dry, and that certainly was a factor.

If you haven't already done so, call the CDOW Grand Junction office (970-225-6100) and ask for the contact info for the person who works that area. He (or she) can give you some good info.

    Good luck!

Sorry to dig up an old thread. Just need some info for an elk hunt this fall.

Jerry, thanks for the additional info. We plan to scout it this summer. If we cant find elk sign, we'll move on to other units on the mesa. Thanks!
