They are moving me to Huntsville ALA

As I mentioned on my ceiling fan thread, they are moving me to Redstone Arsenal/Huntsville ALA. It will be about half the distance to our FLA house from there, than it is from Killeen/Fort Hood TX. This should happen in the next few months. So "Rocket City" here I come!

I was stationed there for a year in 1990 while still in the Army and have been back several times for various schools. I have some old Army buds who retired in that area to look up, good majority work out on the Arsenal.

Moving sucks, no two ways about it, but we have gotten pretty good at it after twenty years in the Army and almost 13 as a DA Civilian.

Hey, I need just shy of three years to reach 62 and retire again. My plan is to come home to our FLA house fer good then.

Good news is it ain't far to Teach's place and I plan to make the annaul shoot next year.

So what other "Gun Nuts" on here live in that area?

Knitepoet and Eli live not that far away, and a few more I can't remember off the top of my noggin. If y'all get up a range day down there give me a shout. I-75 to I-24 to US-72 and I can get there in not all that long a time.

Huntsville's a good area to move into except things are a little pricey now with AMC moving there. My family is from Huntsville. A woman from NC married Joseph Sivley and they settled in Huntsville. He was killed and she moved to Lawrence county with their son, Pleasant and he started my family. The hospital is on Sivley road. Redstone is nice. PX, commissary, class 6, etc.

I spent some months in Huntsville c/o Uncle Nasa and think it's an okay small city, good people w. lots of military influence. You should do fine there, friendly folks, nice climate, low cost of living.

Welcome to the neighborhood! As I'm sure you already know, one of the big advantages of being in or near Huntsville is Larry's Pistol and Pawn- - - - -gun nuts' heaven! While Gander Mountain up the street half a mile looks like a ghost town, Larry's has folks standing three deep at the counter waiting to spend their money! Last time I was there, they had 10 display cases filled with nothing but handguns! They also have a nice indoor shooting range. I can just imagine what the crowd looks like this morning! Another really good place is over on Jordan Lane, J.C.'s Sporting Goods. They have reloading stuff out the wazoo- - - -and lots of it are items I usually have to mail-order like Ballistol, etc.

I live in Athens, about 25 miles west of Huntsville. I agree about Larry's. They have thousands of guns. They have ammo stacked in the aisles. They have a nice indoor firing range.

There is also a public shooting range on the Swan Creek Wildlife Management area. It is provided by the Game and Fish Commision. It is also about 25 miles west of Huntsville. There are a 25, a 50, and two 100 yard ranges. They all have shooting benches on concrete pads. The 25, the 50 and one of the 100 yard ranges are covered.

This area is a pretty nice place to live. The cost of living here is lower than a lot of other areas of the country.

I remember a range ( near a park?) out off Winchester Road toward TN I used a few times back in the early 90s. Also, I have kin folk over on Sand Mountain, Pisgah way who have land I can shoot on.

Yep. I'm a member of the "big" range in B'ham, so I am fairly certain we can arrange a day at the range if you're interested
