    Had some visitors this morning

Went out to get in the truck and go to the polls and noticed some visitors in the hayfield next to the creek on my farm. Here's a picture of the group. They were having some kind of meeting down there so I just let them be.

I'll let them be until spring, that is!

I plan on inviting them over for dinner in the spring when turkey season rolls around.

Re: Had some visitors this morning

A couple of months ago, I was riding with a large group of other biker friends down a back road near Deland Florida. Off in the distance I could see a large group of wild Turkeys gathered on the side of the road we were approaching on which was bordered by a wire fence on our side. The entire group moved to the opposite side of the road as we approached, and as we got closer the turkeys became quite agitated and started running around hysterically trying to get away from what they probably perceived as approaching doom, with the large number of us and all the motorcycle noise. As we rode by, they were running in all directions and flying about. There was also a wire fence on that side of the road, which was preventing some of them an immediate escape, and they were about crapping themselves trying to get away. It made for a very funny scene as we all thundered by. The sad part about it was, I had a small digital video camera trained on them as we rode by, and I thought I caught all the action, but sadly I discovered that I had turned off the camera before we got that far and I was immensely disappointed I didn't get that on camera.

Turkeys can be pretty smart, but they can be dumb as a bag of doorknobs, too. I'm not surprised that the motorcycles freaked them out. Wish you'd got those turkeys on video; that would have been good stuff!

Turkeys are mean as hell, too! Most don't know that, but I can tell you for sure that if a turkey weighed a hundred pounds it wouldn't be safe to go in the woods!

    This^

I used to work with a fella who claimed that the worst 'butt-stompin' (he was no stranger to butt-stompin, either giving or recieving) he ever got was from an old Tom that took exception to him mooning around his territory! He was about 8-9 at the time and probably not much bigger than the turkey!

They are rough on pheasant populations, too. Apparently, one of the major causes of failed pheasant hatches is turkeys peckingthe eggs!

Speaking of wildlife visitors, my mom snapped this pictures of a Pennsylvania buck that walked right up next to her in a neighborhood she was visiting. Judging by the fact that his was a camera phone picture, this big boy was less than 10 yards away from her.

Six-gun, that is a big buck! From the look of his neck, he's in full rut. They do stoopid things then, like being out in the open when they get the rut on.

Woodsrunner is right about turkeys. Tame ones can put a hurting on you, and being bigger than their wild cousins, have more weight to throw around. Geese can hurt you pretty good, too. They can bite you pretty hard with that beak, and beat you senseless with those wings. If turkeys and geese were to grow to 100#, they would be formidable adversaries bare handed. Course little bantam roosters would be terrible, too, if they reaches 100#.

Domestic turkeys have got to be the dumbest animals on the planet, except maybe for dummycraps. About 2 miles off the end of the runway at Castle Air Force Base, there was a big turkey farm, and the noise of the B-52's taking off would send them into such a panic that hundreds of them would pile up together and smother the ones on the bottom of the pile. It was necessary for the planes to make a very dangerous low-speed, low altitude turn immediately after takeoff to avoid flying directly over the place. Uncle Sam got tired of paying their claims for dead birds from the noise!
