    Otis cleaning kits

I had always thought the Otis cleaning kits were a gimmick, and nothing that a REAL cleaning kit would take a challenge from.

For work reasons, I just went out and bought a kit. This is a really well thought out design. I'm impressed.

I'll give a rifle a full cleaning in a bit and post a review. I wanted to see if anyone else uses them, and what you thought of it.

This is the kit I picked up: http://www.otisgun.com/pc_product_de...F2596A96C7CB4A

I've got one that I keep in my room at the hunting camp but It's not something I use regularly. The only thing I don't like about it is the patches. You have to fold them different ways for different calibers and they're like a Chinese puzzle. I just use regular patches and use them like I would with a solid cleaning rod.

    Re: Otis cleaning kits

I have several of them. They are a good field kit and emergency back-up to my somewhat monstrous cleaning/maintenance kit. I keep them in my ruck and field kit for long excursions.

Day to day and ordinary cleaning/maintenance, I use else.

    Good kit, for it's size.

I've got one. It was free, probably wouldn't have paid money for one, but I like it. Kinda handy for the range bag.

What everyone else said. I can't really tell much difference between the Otis and a Bore Snake for a quick field clean, so I usually pack the "Snake."

Had a case refusing to eject from AR- otis would not punch it out, had to use a regular rod. Otherwise ok performance wise for quick cleaning jobs.

I don't car for the Otis cleaning kit. I got issued one in Iraq and I thought it had to many parts and no rod. I guss I'm old fashion.

I have an 8 piece brass cleaning rod that fits in an AR buttstock cleaning kit bag. Uses standard thread jags and accessories. It fits nicely in my hunting pack and is handier for my needs.

    Re: Otis cleaning kits

I use an Otis cleaning system for my AR and it works well. I prefer it over a metal rod that can scratch the inside of the barrel. I agree that the Otis patches are junk but i use regular patches with it and it still works well. I also like the fact that it folds up and can be taken anywhere.

This developed a question in my head (kinda random.) So does a person need to worry about an aluminum cleaning rod messing up a bore if they come on contact???

    Re: Otis cleaning kits

I don't have an Otis cleaning kit. I see them for sale. I have some Kleen bore kits I use for BP and cartridge guns. Over the years I have collected bits and pieces here and there. I got enough to do what I need to do. On the other hand I haven't bought any new cleaning kits in years, I might go look this weekend at some.

    Re: Otis cleaning kits

The one I bought has a segmented rod in it. Since it's a Military issue kit, I guess they need that for getting a stuck case out. It also has a brand new Gerber Multiplier set in it, which is super cool.

Did not get to clean the gun last night. Hopefully tonight.

Depends on your school of thought. Some want a softer rod as to not harm the bore. On the flip side, softer aluminum is more prone to collecting debris that can act as more of an abrasive than a smooth SS rod would be.

Me, give me a Stainless one piece rod (unless in the field, I keep a multi piece to clear obstructions, squibs, and stuck cases) and go from breach whenever possible to keep the crown free of keyholes.

Makes sense to me. And makes me feel a bit better about the cleaning rod I use. And I always try to avoid the muzzle as entry. Thanks Colt.

No worries if you clean from the breech. On lever and semi autos, a muzzle protector(looks like a funnel) can be bought to protect the muzzle crown and rifling from being lapped by the cleaning rod. The muzzle protector fits over the cleaning rod, and is worth every cent you pay for one.
