    AR-15 barrel twist

In an AR-15 carbine .223 what is the lower limit of bullet weight that a 1-7 twist barrel will stabilize? The rifle will mainly be an HD carbine with some hunting and plinking thrown in. The HD and hunting loads will probably be 69gr. Will 55 gr bullets stabilize? What about lighter varmint bullets?

Hard to overtwist unless velocities get really up there...if 1:9, 1:8 will do 'em....is 1:7 too far off?

1:7 can be good from as low as 45gr up to the heavies. I say can because each barrel is different and you will have to test the fringes.

Mine handles 55 grain just fine. I do not recall trying anything lighter.

I've shot 50gr bullets out of a 1-7" twist with no problem.
Lord, make me fast and accurate. Let my aim be true and my hands faster than those who would seek to destroy me. Grant me victory over my foes and those that wish to do harm to me and mine. But Lord, if today be the day that you call me home, let me die in a pile of empty brass.

Most any .223 barrel will stabilize a 55 grain Spitzer. Many will stabilize 60s and larger, depending on the bullet and its shape. I shoot 70 grain Speers in my 22 250 ADL 700 synthetic. However, those bullets are not full Spitzers, they'e a little blunt. That particular rifle has a 1-14 twist.

I've shot the 40 gr. WallyWorld ammo out of my 1:7 barrel and it worked just fine (plinking ammo). It was an unplanned purchase that day since I was halfway to the range (long drive) when I realized I didn't any ammo!

    Hey snake,

I just read in another gun rag that a 22-250 can't stabilize a 70 gr. bullet in a 1:14 or 1:12! I'm not doubting you snake, I'm just remarking on the blanket statement made in this gun rag. I guess they don't know about your blunt bullets.

1:7 twist in .223 will shoot any bullet with the possible exception of the 90gr SMK and JLK.

Since the minimum required spin rate is dictated by the length of the bullet and not the weight, Snake is able to stabilize the shoter 70gr Speers, but would be hard pressed to accomplish that with 70gr spitzers such as a Hornady 70gr GMX, a 69gr SMK or a Berger 70gr VLD, etc.
