    F-22 crashs at Tyndall

Pilot ejected safely. No cause yet for the crash, he must have had an IFE since he was attemping to land on the drone runway. My guess is a bird stike. The new wing commander just took over yesterday, welcome aboard. I knew him when he was a Capt. One of my IP's.
Anyhow, they just had a news comference, not a lot of info yet. Best question I heard from one of the reporters was: : How high was he when he crashed??" Think about it!!
My guess is near sea level!!

    93,000, 000 000,000 000 feet.

He was trying to land on an asteroid.

How long since he left the O club? Poor joke- - - -I know! Some of the Wild Weasels who flew the hotrod F-105's at Korat had a habit of walking a thin line with the "bottle to throttle" time, but those guys were as close to sitting ducks as anybody I knew- - - -playing tag with SAM's all the time! When they decided to party, the best bet was to stay as far out of the way as possible!

Thank God he punched out safely! The plane can be replaced....the pilot can't.

    Re: F-22 crashs at Tyndall

That's the second accident at Tyndall this year. Last May a student was doing touch and goes and didn't increase the power enough to get airborne. He put the gear up and settled back down on the runway. Not a total lose, just $30 million in damage. That one was pilot error.

I remember, at Da Nang, shoving many a back seater up F-4's ladder because he had been drinking. It always came back with zero O2 because they went 100% emergency O2.
It's a LOT different these days. Drinking is discouraged, I think they even banned Friday roll calls. Anything to boost morale!!

Yep, for some reason guys thought 100% O2 was a hangover cure- - - - -Dad says his B-17 crew members in WW II did the same thing, and I've seen maintenance troops on several bases with an oxygen hose stuck in their mouths, huffing straight O2 while they worked on the electronics or did an engine run, etc.

We had 100% oxygen in our aircraft except for the EF-10B, I believe that one still had a diluter demand system.
NATOPS required 100% oxygen from takeoff to landing; though many of us would unhook one side of the mask
    and breath cockpit air.
