I've got the bug for a new gun, tell me not to

Actually, I know you won't tell me not to, but tell me what I could do with it.

I am sorely tempted to scoop up one of these H&K USP pistols in .40, with six magazines for $625 shipped:

    http://www.ohioordnanceworks.com/Fir...LEMPackage.cat

I am not a big USP fan, and I don't like the .40 (I refer to it as a 10mm Short, that reflects my view of it). However, at that price, I am sorely tempted.

Dad has a .40 and reloads for it, so ammo isn't really an issue. Also, I'm pretty sure all I need to shoot 9mm is a new barrel and some magazines.

    Thoughts?

    Meh.
The 40 dont trip my trigger, not there is anything wrong with it. HKs dont trip my trigger either.

I'd go with this SIG for $450 before I would go with an HK...

No , you would need to change slides. The casehead diameter is bigger in the .40 and ya won't get extractor bite.

Ya can shoot .357 Sig with just a barrel swap. It's a .40 S&W case simply necked down. Several maker sell guns with both cal barrels.

If it was a screaming great deal (around 400), I'd say jump on it, but there are plenty of other guns around that price point that aren't .40 S&W's.

I almost passed out when I read the title...

I just read the whole thread and now I feel better. BTW that is a screaming good deal on that gun/mags. Of course assuming you do want a .40 which I think is a fine chambering.

Dude that is about 1/2 the retail on that setup. If it was any lower I'D BUY ONE and I need another handgun like I need an elective lobotomy...

And if it were a nine mil, it would definitely be worth it.

It's a forty though.......therefore it is bad, and automatically worth less.

There is a reason they went from seven hundred used with two mags to six with six.

They are also selling a Steyr M-95 Bulgarian a $ 119 dollar MILSURP (with C&R) 8X56R for $675 and call it a "Hard Find", I agree, it's hard to find one selling for that much......

Ok, I'm still relatively new here and I can't tell if you guys are being sarcastic or serious about the .40 caliber round being so undesirable. Is it really the general consensus of many of you on this board that the .40 is not a good caliber or even that the 9mm is superior to the .40?

    Why???

9mm's not superior to the .40, but some of us feel that the benefits of the .40 (slightly larger, heavier bullet) are outweighed by the costs (higher ammo costs, lower magazine capacity, higher recoil energy, slower recovery time) when you use modern, well-designed ammo.

The .40 became a "great cartridge" due to lucky timing.

Many think the .40 was an answer to a non-existent question. I think the .40 does have it's place and quite frankly it's a chambering I like. While with modern SD ammo the differences that we heatedly argued in the past on the 9mm vs. .40 vs. .45 are now truly academic from a performance perspective each has it's hardcore following unwilling to give even when all logic is out of the equation. Kinda Chevy vs. Ford and Democrat vs. Republican.

I have several .40 and I feel very cozy when I have them on my belt. I also feel rather cozy with a 9mm and a .45 on any given day. I find platform to be a better gage in my decision of what to carry (size, weight, concealability with what I'm wearing) than potential size of hole in BG.

On a last note most of the derision is done in jest just like the pileup that occurs here when someone brings up the .270. A venerable hunting cartridge that will do anything others in its class will rather nicely, and still for some unknown reason it's only suitable for women and coyote hunters

And yet many here that put it down have no problems singing the praises of the .45acp which is even larger, heavier and more expensive to feed

And because FBI agents got all wussy and could not handle recoil.

The only reason I have a couple of .40s is because they were killer deals. But with DHS buying millions of .40 rounds, it might not be a bad idea to have a gun that would work with that soom

I'll admit, I like the .45 because of one reason... the 1911. If I get a plastic fantastic, I'll get it in 9mm. But for me, to carry a 1911 it needs to be in a cartridge that fills the magazine, like a .45 ACP, 10mm Auto, or .38 Super. Spacers in magazines or other such mods to make smaller bullets fit are not my cup of tea. I know they are for some folks.

AND BTW let's talk about the economics of the deal. Remember just a few years back when the German police dumped a bunch of SIG P225's in the market for about $260! A deal like that comes around once in a while. Now try to find ONE of those guns for anywhere near that price.

The mags alone for this gun are over $40 a piece. I can buy this gun, and even if I just want it as a toy for a while I can wait one year and turn the set over for $900 on GB no sweat.

Regarding the USP, if I had the money I'd get it, regardless of caliber. And EFK Fire Dragon has conversion barrels to allow it to run 9mm for $154.99. The rim diameter is 0.92 mm less, meaning that the radius is 0.46 mm less. The extractor should be able to hold that pretty well, even with 0.46 mm less to grab on to.
