Okay guys, I need help with a school assignment regarding traditional Irish Food.

My clinical group at school has to do a culture project on Ireland.

I've been "volunteered" to cook something, and I'm not allowed to bring alcohol onto school property.

What are some of your favorite Irish dishes/recipes, especially ones that'll be easy to sample out small portions on disposable dinnerware, to 90 or so students?

Can't help you, but you suck. I never got to do anything cool like that in college.

Dude. You know who to come to with this kind of stuff. My family came here from Northern Ireland in the early 1900's. my specialty is beer and potatoes lol. You have twice baked, whole fries, tater tots, baked, mashed, potatoe cakes and much much more. But just remember, taters out of a box are a mortal sin.

Easiest (and tastiest,) is simple mashed taters. Get a bag of Idaho potatoes and peel them. Chop them up into smallish bits and throw them into a large pot or kettle. Add water and a half stick of butter ( not margarine.) bring them to a boil until soft. Test that with a fork btw. Drain off excess water and proceed to mash them with a masher, large spoon, or even a mixer. Add about a cup of milk and a heaping spoon of butter and continue to mash/mix. Add salt, largely than sparingly until the texture and flavor is right on.

Shepherds Pie is English in origin.

But if Shepard made a pie would it be Shepherds Pie or Shepard's pie?

There's the traditional corned beef and cabbage, but I really like shepherd's pie.

There's a national chain of Irish bars called Fado that makes boxty chips that they serve with a cheese dip. Doubt it's traditional irish, but sure as heck is tasty! They also serve them stuffed sort of like a quesadillia

Shepard's pie is always good too. Prefer mine with lamb rather than beef.

Irish stew and soda bread. Can't get more traditional than that.

The corned beef would be easy. You can even get it at the grocery with everything needed but the cabbage. I love cabbage.

Shepherd's pie, corned beef and cabbage, Irish stew, thin potato pancakes made from leftover mashed potatoes and some gravy to go with. MMmmmmmm! Y'all are flinging a craving on me. None of it is hard to make, and sure tastes good!

That or even simpler, Coddle instead of Stew. That is the SIMPLEST Irish dish in the world.

Of course you can always blow their minds with some Black Pudding....

Thanks guys, I believe that I'll go with the Shepard's Pie. It will be relatively easy to make, and also it will be convenient to make two or three disposable baking dishes full, so I don't have to worry about somebody making off with my pyrex.

Cool Christmas tune by the Clancy Brothers. Tells ya of all the ingredients for a traditional Irish Christmas feast.

On the road the frost is glistening.
    People stream from Midnight Mass.
    Friendly candles glow in windows.
Strangers greet you as you pass.
    Home then to the laden table;
Ham and goose and pints of beer,
    Whisky handed 'round in tumblers,
Christmas comes but once a year!

Puddings made with eggs and treacle,
    Seeded raisins and ground suet,
    Sated breadcrumbs and mixed spices,
    Grated rind and plenty fruit,
    Cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg,
    Porter, brandy, and old ale.
Don't forget the wine and whisky!
Christmas comes but once a year!

    Women fussing in the kitchen,
Lay the food on every plate.
    Men impatient in the hallway,
Guinness and porter while we wait.
Who cares if we work tomorrow?
Now's the time to spread good cheer!
Pass the punch around the table!
Christmas comes but once a year!
