Moose application in and more

The family is in for moose again this year. Hopefully one of us will get drawn. It is by far my favorite meat, and the rest of the family agrees. :drool2:

Spring bear and turkey seasons open on Monday, the 15th. We have three bait sites prepped and ready for the opener. As a bonus, there is a flock of turkeys roosting less than a half mile from one of the bait sites. My plan for this site is to sit in a stand with a slug-barrel 12 gauge and turkey call. I'm thinking it's best to keep my tag options open without carrying two different weapons.

I see issues with the shotgun. If I have a slug chambered, turkeys will come in. If I have shot chambered, a bear will walk in. If I leave the chamber empty and wait, I'll spook whatever comes in trying to load.

Any advice, or is this too hair-brained to consider?

Shotgun ready for the bird. Handgun for the bear. Assuming you have a handgun chambered for an adequate enough cartridge.

That is something to think about. I have 6.5" S&W 626 that is adequate for the task. I'm not a big fan of wearing it while sitting in a climber.

That's a good idea, but I only have one double. 20 gauge coach; modified and improved. It's hell on forest grouse, but maybe inadequate for turkeys.

My kids have been using a 20ga. with Winchester Supreme loads, we have not taken a turkey YET, but judging from the pattern at 30 yds, it will do the job.

A slug in the other barrel and the handgun for back up and you have a plan. Actually, you are lucky, we cannot hunt two species at the same time in MN, its to confusing for the DNR to know what we are doing:roll:.

I do not go hunting without my g20 at my side.
