Center-Grip 284 Winchester XP-100 Range Report

Ernie BishopErnie Bishop Posts: 8,609 Senior Member
This XP was built specifically for hunting. Eric Wallace (Nawakwa Accuracy) built it.
Developing a load for this was way overdo, but I had time in the middle of the day to shoot.
It would have been better with no mirage to fight with in early morning or late afternoon. But I have a good idea what it will do in less than ideal.
All shooting was done off of a bi-pod and small leather field bag. I was shooting at 100 yards.
I had a really great group with 51.0 grains of H-4350, but I forgot to take a picture. Just one large hole! A blackbird interrupted things...

He had to have somebody else shoot his .308. The recoil was too much for him.

    I am a sensitive guy:cool2:
I did have the 308 out again today though. WOW, is that Holland brake effective--I didn't even break a nail.
I think this is just two shots at 100 yards. Shooting off of a bi-pod. 168 A-Max

Bah - I'm blocked from the pics at work. I'm already excited to see them...I may have something similar in the works. ;)
Accuracy: because white space between bullet holes drives me insane.

Stretched it out to approx 700 and it did very good, then Oops-I had not tightened the scope rings down sufficiently.:head:
All is corrected now and I moved the scope back as far as I could since everything was loose already. I have no idea why I didn't do that in the first place.

Gotta hate when you miss that little step. I did the same thing a few months back and sent, oh, about $15 worth of ammo downrange worthlessly before realizing why my groups sucked. Good to hear that it's rectified and shooting well. Any immediate hutning plans on the docket for the pistol?

    Ideally elk.
But maybe a mule deer or antelope too.
Truly intend to blood it this fall.

Nice, looks like Zee's stock painting. That should get the job done and in .284 Winchester, it will reach out and touch something.
    Daddy, what's an enabler?
Son that's somebody with nothing to do with his time but keep me in trouble with mom.

    Got the MV=2570 fps (162 A-Max)
Mild load, but I have never used H-4350 for it before.
It shoots everything so good, I expect it to continue. At least, I hope so:love:

    That should work.

What was the barrel length again? I can't remember.

Like 17.75 or just under 18"
I am going to work up some more loads until I get pressure if the accuracy continues.

So, which one is it? 17.75" or just under 18"? Come on! There's a big difference there!

I guess I will need to get my high-speed low-drag yardstick out and check.:silly:

Just use your Mark 1 Eyeball. You keep it calibrated, right?

Whoa, on those groups. I have a wrench that will tighten those rings for you. Clear that issue right up. :tooth:
    Very nice, Ernie. Very nice.

    And nice paint job, Zee.
