How do you mark your guns?

shotgunshooter3shotgunshooter3 Posts: 6,112 Senior Member
A few people at the SE Shoot were horrified that I have my last name written on my M&P in silver Sharpie, which lead me to this thread.

It's not something I need to do by any stretch, but it can't hurt.

All my magazines get my name and a number written on them, along with a mark to identify the mags that came with the firearm from the factory.

My plastic guns get my name written on them with permanent marker on a plastic part (frame on M&P, butt stock on AR, etc). It can easily be wiped off with a bit of effort and I like it.

So what about you?

I don't mark them, unless they would be too old to have a serial number. Then I would make up a number and using a metal marker or engraver, I would put this number under the stock if it's a rifle or under the grips if it were a handgun. Then record the number along with my other Serial Numbers, after all it would be used for tracking. Also, the more digits the less chance of inadvertanly copying another gun's SN. Otherwise, I record the SN on a sheet of paper with my other gun's SN and keep them in a safe place. That's usually in my gun safe. I also have my SNs on a CD. That's mark enough for me.

I don't. If I were to get into competition, I would mark my magazines.

I started when I went to a Sig Forum shoot with Phillip. Snake207 and I were at the same table, and both of us had multiple M&P and Glock magazines. At the end of the day, had to do a bit of detective work to tell whos was which. Much easier to do that if it's got silver sharpie on it. :tooth:

My borderline OCD insists that I keep all my stuff in a bag when I'm with other shooters, which simplifies things. But I can see the need for marking if it's an environment with multiple shooters on the line at the same time, with multiple magazines bouncing on the ground during reloads.

I usually unzip first; then hike my leg...

May put my trust name on the AR pistol, thinking of SBR for it but that would be all.

I have been known to tuck a dogtag under the recoil pad of certain rifles....just to remove all doubt as to whose rifle it might be... and I have my AR mags marked with my initial/number and the year it was acquired. But by-in-large, no I don't mark my firearms

The thought never crossed my mind.

BUT, other than the SE shoot, I've never been anywhere where anyone had the same stuff as me.
In my circles, I'm a bit of an oddball, firearms wise.

I have my initials on my AR mags. But my guns are all pretty unique, and are definitely Mine.

SN all stored in safe place, no marks. Some may have a couple of hunting marks, but weren't purposely marked.

Never had a need to mark my guns. Now my magazines are a different story they are engraved with a secret #. I hate to think it's possible that some of my shooting acquaintances are taking my magazines. Yet if they were taken by mistake they should be returned sometime. Not one missing mag has ever been returned.

I haven't lost any since I started marking them and I am much more attentive then I used to be.

Back when I was into astronomy, I found a place that made custom metal (micro) stamping tool. I got a sample tool from them, but can't seem to find it at home or online any more. It's a handheld small tool with a curved tip that has tiny/micro metal writings on it. You press it hard against any surface, including metal and it will leave a tiny nearly undetectable mark with whatever word you chose. You can imprint on a very discrete spot that will make it even harder to detect. You can read what's imprinted, but a magnifying glass is helpful.

Anyway, some jewelers use similar tools to mark their works. I'm thinking such a tool would be great to mark your guns and gears.

I am pagan and I want to put protection runes on my magazines so a metal marker or paint pen would work?
