Spent all morning packing my gear for the range today. Hearty breakfast, cooler full of food, firearms all safely stowed... Oh! ... think I'll check their website just to make sure ... closed today for staff meeting and BBQ. Sigh.....
Back in the day, everybody knew Radio Shack components were sub-standard. Today, I was attempting to put a 1/4" stereo phone plug onto a CB microphone cable - the phone plug was NOS Radio Shack - a real nice one too. The stupid thing is bad. I should have known better than to have bought the thing in the first place, but I was in a hurry and it was available. How do you screw up a phone plug? Damn company is out of business and I'm still dealing with their crappy parts...

I ordered an unmachined steam engine kit made of bronze and iron castings along with bar stock. It obviously needs finish machined and assembled but its a working model. I started on the cylinder today. Its gonna take some time. I love these kinds of things.

I got the flywheel and part of the base finished today. Both turned out superb. Its not that the kit is difficult to machine as much as its time consuming because of the setups and different ops. I forgot pics but ill grab some and post them monday.

I'm envious with your steam engine. Always wanted to get into building my own. Have a little Wilesco D21.I started a thread a few months back on steam engines. Look forward to a build log.

Yep, and it GOT everywhere too. Hell, the damn puddle I drove through was all of about 3 inches deep, and there was sand and muddy water everywhere, including the inside of the hood!! Cleaned it all up - as the guys on the Jeep forum say: If you don't clean it up now, it'll be raining in your face when you're working on the Jeep!"

Went to a thrift store looking for a bicycle for my wife. Didn't find one, but found this:
It was marked $40, but they were having a 50% off sale, so I got it for $20. Figured it had a busted movement that was probably between 50 and 80 years old. Somebody's kitschy idea of Rococo. I'd throw a new $100 movement into it and have something cool...
I was half right. The movement is busted. Took it out to see what it was to see if I could find a replacement. As soon as I saw it (the movement), I knew it was something special. Long story short: It was made in 1890, and is a creme-de-la-creme make called a Lenzkirch - from Germany. Worth, the best I can tell, somewhere between $1,000 and $2,000. Some of their porcelain cased clocks were made by Dresden, and would be worth even more, but I haven't yet figured out who made this case other than its NOT Dresden china. So now I gotta find a *good* clock repair company - because you don't replace this, you fix it. Half inclined to ship the movement off to the same guy in Hollister, Ca that rebuilt my grandfather clock, I know who he is...

I am setting here this morning on here and talking on the phone instead of moving bales which is what I intended to do. I bought a new tractor last year and now for the second time it is down because of emission crap. This new stuff is great when its working but today I am wondering if it was a mistake.

'Exhaust fluid' and all that computerized crap on tractors is a load of meadow muffins. And the owner can't fix much of anything on them because everything in the programming of that computer mess is proprietary and they don't share that info including the diagnostics programming. That's why my 'newest' diesel tractor was made in 1982. I'd rather buy an old tractor and have it reconditioned than buy new and have to deal with the new crap that breaks and ya have to spend so much to fix it.
I hope they don't take you to the cleaners on repairs!

Like your new tractor the wifes new car has more computerized stuff on it, I made sure she got the 100K bumper to bumper warranty on it. Guess she was Channeling BigChief when she picked this one out. But NO she doesn't wear birkenstocks

The whole proprietary software thing John Deere and others have going on is a pain. They all need to do like Kenworth make you buy their proprietary data reader and then pay a yearly subscription to their software service. While not ideal at least you can then diagnose and service your own equipment.
And before some of you start we know technology is the worst blah blah blah.
The bottom line it’s how things are, if your a large enough operation old tractors/equipment won’t get it done. The 100 acres out back is a far stretch from 15,000+ acres. Having to call and wait for the JD guy to show up to the field is a pain. With the Kenworth program it’s plug-in and go to work. Again not ideal but it’s the price of the game these days.

Next year Zorba will take this to Antique Roadshow and after a Sotheby's auction, will never be heard from again except for a used Mai Tai straw tapped to a blank postcard from Cancun.
No idea why I get so much MN work. At least this job is one that I can get behind. I installed a PU sniper scope, inletted the stock for it and made a custom bolt handle using the original knob. Turned out nice.

Good work on that bolt handle mod and scope mount! Those Mosins are pretty popular and ammo is still pretty cheap. Good rifle for hunting and other purposes. The rifles may not be beauty queens, but they work right good and don't care if you get 'em dirty. They just keep on working.
